Debian 12.8 and Trinity DE?

#1 Post by Silent Observer »

I'm interested in Trinity (thanks, @Hallvor) Desktop Environment -- from my reading, it's an independent fork of KDE Plasma (3 or 4, I don't recall which) and is available in all three major package formats. I used Plasma 4 for years and didn't like most of the changes when Plasma went to version 5 (I may be a little autistic), especially that the Keramik theme wasn't updated. I'm sure it's possible to install Trident DE in Debian, but when I've installed a second DE on an installed distro in the past (Antix?) I found there wasn't a practical way to clear the disk space used by the previous and I had to choose the DE every time I booted the system. Is there a reasonably clean way to remove an no-longer-wanted DE after installing its replacement?

I believe it is called Trinity, and I like it a lot too!

You could try removing some core libraries, like this:

Code: Select all

# apt remove --purge kde* plasma* -y
Rather, I suggest just starting without a GUI and add from there. This is for Bullseye, but it could be helpful: viewtopic.php?t=150536

For those of us who haven't seen any of the Toy Story movies, what major and minor versions (i.e. 12.5? 12.6?) is Bullseye? Edit: found this elsewhere, Bullseye is Debian 11.

Trinity is based on the code from KDE 3 which was dropped when KDE4 was dumped on the world and has gone on through KDE 5 and is now at KDE 6. TDE is not Plasma.

TDE has been under continual improvement and development by its own team for many years. If you want a quick and easy way to experience TDE + Debian then go to Q4OS and have a look. You can grab the latest TDE version https://sourceforge.net/projects/q4os/f ... o/download. You can install onto any other Debian by following the instructions on the Trinity Desktop Project site. Q4OS does not track all the latest changes in the TDE project.

Ugh. I used a desktop theme called "Keramik" from 2011 (in Mepis 11) until 2016, when Kubuntu 16 switched to Plasma 5 and Keramik would no longer work. It looks like that was KDE 4 back then; does anyone know if Keramik works in TDE or KDE 3? The theme apparently goes back to the early 2000s, but I'm not sure if the still-downloadable version covers that older KDE (which would suggest compatibility with TDE)...

Excellent!

Okay, then how would I go about installing Debian without a DE -- just uncheck all the entries at that point in the netinst? And then after the reboot, log into a terminal and add the repositories etc. to install TDE?
