[Software] universal keyboard shortcup maker ?

#1 Post by Jeff63 »

Hello folks ^^)

I'm looking for a tool that could create keyboard shortcuts for ANY software menu item !

if you take only Dolphin per ex. there are many keyboard shortcuts already available in it and others can be created by using its prefs editor.
BUT there are lotsa of it that are useless (see the KS that brings the 'about' stuff, who needs that one ? there is already a standardized menu item for this and you will look at it only one times...

AND it is impossible to put KS on useful menu items as it are not been thinked that someone could need it : 'create archive as .zip' per ex.
I use that menu item zillions of times each month and can't put a keyboard shortcut on it ! silly.

it is also not possible to create at once many zip files by choosing lotsa files/drawers and ask for a independent zip file for each in one go...
that would ease a lot my (and others I'm sure) work if that existed...

I haven't found a software like dolphin that would do this. yet.

so the ask for an universal tools that can create KS for any linux software regardless who made it.

thanks for the help :)

Well, truthfully, that comes from a sufficiently narrow view to allow the idea. It's essentially impossible.

If you make all the choices and eliminate competing and conflicting methods used by others, you could get there. For each app with shortcuts and a global shortcut manager would need to be able to check and reconcile conflicts. It would quickly become unwieldy.

Actually, that's probably pretty easy. For Dolphin, I wouldn't know how - because that is a choice I've personally eliminated, but a custom action in thunar could easily do it.

In fact, on my system it would be easy to point out competing ideas and how we soon over burden 'simplicity'. I use a vm server so that each vm instance is tailored. If we put all of them together into one system things like right click context menus with their customization would need a second screen to display it all.

The magic of Linux customization essentially excludes any universal form since the two ideas are fundamentally exclusive.
