how to customize gnome classic

#1 Post by ignorantMan »

I really don't like gnome3 on my laptop.
I'm looking for a more classic ( gnome2) style.
So i've switched to gnome classic but it lacks of customisations.
For example i'd like to remove the top bar and add a fast app search (by typing) into start menu.
How can do that?

I think you would need to install an extension to have a searchable menu.

Hello.

You can install package gnome-flashback and play with a more classic ( gnome2) style.

Ever considered trying Xfce? Slim, fast, highly customizable, no surprises, stable, everything works like expected.

As far as I know, MATE desktop environment is a successor to Gnome 2.

Me neither! I switched to MATE, which is based on GNOME 2, and am still using it. It's customizable, but not as much as KDE. What I like most about MATE is that it uses fewer resources, which eventually helps with faster booting.

Function keys work on many of the other Desktop Environments. If they don't, the are easy to set up.

Dark themes are also present on other environments.

I don't know about automatic night mode. KDE can probably do this. Cinnamon and MATE are worth looking at too. As mentioned above, there is Xfce. All of these options have a traditional desktop presentation: launcher start button, panel, window switcher, tray, etc. Some are more customizable than others.

In order to try out different Desktop Environments, I would recommend to set up a Virtual Machine (KVM/QEMU) and install a Debian Live System of your choice there instead of installing any additional environments on your production machine. In case you're not content with the new environment, you can simply throw away the installation without messing up anything.

If you install with the standard Debian installer, you can also choose several environments at once. After install, you can choose one of them in the signon screen. For a try, installing from a Live system is easier.
