[Hardware] Which CPU family has better uptime for 24/7 CLI server

#1 Post by sam71623 »

I am self-learning on set up home weather logger running 24/7.

Which CPU family are popular choice by professional 24/7 users? Is Intel CPU has more professional 24/7 users and more debugged?

For CLI-only (no desktop) server, should I get a low end Intel for the task, core i3, generation 12, low tdp and not affected by recent issue? Or Intel N100?

I refer to 'popular hardware' that are used as desktop office PC, not professional rack mount 'real server'

From extensive (various) forums experience, I've seen more trouble because of buying too new than CPU-specific issues. IOW, choice between AMD and Intel is a personal preference, not one or the other as technologically superior. That relationship changes as new products are released, and varies among tiers. The APUs in AMD CPUs could possibly be a bit more troublesome than the iGPUs in Intel, but this could be nothing but more AMD users than Intel users. My more recent purchases include one low TDP Intel, e.g. in this PC, i3-7100T 35W TDP configurable to 25W, a newer i5-11400 65W TDP because I was seeking more threads. I do a lot of admin using the ttys, and can't imagine how CPU choice should have any apparent impact on exclusively running in multi-user.target.

Is there nowadays more AMD than Intel for professional IT business user running Linux servers?

I only suggested that might be a possibility that skews support questions as an indicator. I don't know Intel's, AMD's, HP's, Dell's, Lenovo's, Acer's or other sales statistics.

I would say it does not matter at all. If you are still interested, you could for example skew n security updates backward, and search amd/intel freguency. I suppose you would not get many hits.

cli usage itself cuts a big procent of matching security updates. I have ever red a proof of concept how Linux kernel can be upgraded without reboot.

As mentioned, it doesn't matter. I'd probably use an ARM processor (running headless) for any lightweight task and 24/7 uptime because of lower power consumption.
