Blinking cursor after installing updates
I'm running Debian testing on my desktop PC with an Nvidia 4070 graphics card. After installing some updates, my computer hangs when trying to load sddm. All I see is a black screen with a blinking cursor.
In the xorg logs I found that it's trying to load the nouveau driver, but not the nvidia driver I have installed. I suspect this is the problem, but not sure how to proceed.

Try booting to the previous working kernel. Then reinstall nvidia-driver.

Re: Blinking cursor after installing updates
Same thing for me since kernel 6.12.3.
Now 6.12.6.
I'm running debian sid with nvidia driver - nvidia GeForce GTX 1050
Maybe problem with nvidia driver on this kernel 6.12.x. ?
When i boot with kernel 6.11.10 it works !
Must waiting an update of nvidia driver I suppose

Re: Blinking cursor after installing updates
I seem to no longer be able to install older kernels, like 6.11.10. otherwise I'd want to check if you workaround works. Is that expected?

Nvidia driver 535.216.03 works for me with kernel 6.11.10 on debian sid but not with kernel 6.12.x
Maybe just wait for update of nvdia driver ? A bug ?

Re: Blinking cursor after installing updates
I want to try the 6.11.10 kernel, but I'm not sure how. It was removed from my machine.
Re: Blinking cursor after installing updates
Try an official Nvidia driver (the last is NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-565.77.run at this time) from https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/, more advanced version.
I've it, ok.
For Wayland I need nvidia-drm.modeset=1 https://wiki.debian.org/NvidiaGraphicsDrivers#Wayland.

Re: Blinking cursor after installing updates
Seems like on 6.12 it still loads nouveau regardless of it being blacklisted. I have one report on MX Linux with the same backported driver and 6.12 that running nvidia-xconfig solved that issue. It creates a correct xorg.conf, apparently an already existing 20-nvidia.conf file is ignored...?
Still, this is still not the desired behaviour, regardless of the above workaround. Siduction is using a 550 driver and didn't report this, but I was not able to backport that in my first try.

Re: Blinking cursor after installing updates
nvidia-xconfig fixed it for me and am now able to start X successfully.
Re: Blinking cursor after installing updates
Did you install the latest drivers by downloading them directly from the nVidia website and now it works with the 6.12.x kernel?jebez wrote: 2024-12-29 00:19 Try an official Nvidia driver (the last is NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-565.77.run at this time) from https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/, more advanced version.

Could you please explain to me how you installed them?

Re: Blinking cursor after installing updates
Yes, we now have several more reports on the MX side that installing and running nvidia-xconfig will fix it. I guess it didn't get quite enough tests before moving from Sid to testing.mihai121212 wrote: 2024-12-29 08:49 nvidia-xconfig fixed it for me and am now able to start X successfully.

The upgrade to 6.12 also broke things for me. In my case, only one of my two monitors would have a display on it and the graphical performance was poor. Things worked as expected when loading 6.11 at boot.
