[Testing - Trixie] Plasma lag when typing in Konsole

#1 Post by phoebus »

Hi all,

I have a new machine that doesn't play well with stable, even with backported kernel. To make it work, I upgraded to Trixie.
I'm glad to report that there are no freezes and crashes. There is, however, considerable lag when I type into Konsole or when typing password into SDDM.

I haven't noticed this in other applications (I'm typing in FF now, and it works without any lag).

I have the correct firmware for amdgpu and everything (aside from Konsole) seems to work OK.
Nothing appears in logfiles when I type into console and it's laggy. It's not repeat rate or something like that - lag is periodical and sometimes lags more than other times.

Any ideas?

Some info:
Machine: AMD Ryzen 7 PRO 8840HS w/ Radeon 780M Graphics
Kernel: 6.12.6-amd64 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Debian 6.12.6-1 (2024-12-21)
DE: Plasma 6.2.4-1
I'm on wayland.

Thanks

How did you installed Debian testing? Upgraded from stable to testing by editing /etc/apt/sources.list?
I think it's better to install from:
the testing installer https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/dail ... 64/iso-cd/,
the live testing https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/week ... so-hybrid/ that you can test the live if the issue persists,
a live testing using mmdebstrap viewtopic.php?t=159997.

Hi jebez,

indeed, I upgraded from stable to testing, but the upgrade went smooth and there are no packages that weren't upgraded due to conflicts / dependencies.
I should all, I experience same lag also when typing into Kate; funny enough, Firefox and Thunderbird don't have this problem. I'm assuming it must be something with plasma...

One more bit of info: when running on battery (It's thinkpad P14 AMD), it's unbearable - think of random lags between 2 and 5 seconds for keyboard input.
I'm assuming it must be related to power saving/profile. I'll look further into it, but I'd appreciate any help :)

Did you test the live testing KDE https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/week ... 64-kde.iso if the issue persists?

I'm on a desktop PC without battery, I haven't this issue.

Look Settings, System Settings, Power Management.

Hello!

Install inxi, and run in terminal/konsole

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxxxmprz
Post the result in code tags, like I did above.
