Problem to get the download page for scid, rolling

#1 Post by keos »

Hello,

I read somewhere that there is now a rolling version in Debian, 12.9?.

Could someone say if it is the same as Tumbleweed?.

I want to try this scid 12.9 Xfce4 but I can't find the download location, the one I downloaded without an option for scid during the installation was this:
Distributor ID: Debian
Description: Debian GNU/Linux 12 (bookworm)
Release: 12
Codename: bookworm
--could someone, please, give me the link for ...?,

thanks you very much.

I think what you read is incorrect. Debian doesn't provide a rolling version.

I'm afraid distrowatch is wrong and it wouldn't be the first time I've seen that

https://wiki.debian.org/DebianUnstable
Introduction

Debian Unstable (also known by its codename "Sid") is not a release, but rather the development version of the Debian distribution containing the latest packages that have been introduced into Debian. It is not a "rolling release", as no release-like quality assurance and integration testing is done on it.
I've run Unstable for years; it's not a release at all, it's a development platform. distrowatch isn't the only resource that gets it wrong on whether Sid is a rolling release, a lot of folks believe that :)

I have searched for weeks for something based on Debian that could be a rolling release, I can't find anything credible :( , there is only a system called Rhino Linux that they themselves claim to be a rolling release, and because it is not an opinion from a third party, I would like to consult with you here ...is it credible ...? :?

I don't have any experience but what I saw looks not quite ready for primetime to me.

If I had to choose between Rhino and Debian Testing I'd choose Debian.

Yeah... but I'm looking to get rid of the hassle (at least that's my case) of 'upgrades', and Debian claims that there is no 'rolling release' as such in their versions :( so I think I should try Rhino, maybe they really have managed to do it somehow... I just installed it yesterday, it has kernel 6.1.0-29-amd64, anyway... thanks for commenting.

Maybe search Debian LTS, long term support. Companies using Debian also like minimize upgrades.

long term support
is not a 'rolling release', which is what I was looking for ...

It has been confirmed to me by some people, in another forum:

for Debian based systems, only PCLinuxOS and Rhino Linux are rollings systems,

Have not tried, but have read some reports, rolling distros generate more problems than they solve.

But it is your decision.

Me too!

but it was a long time ago, you'll see the difference if you try one now, I have Tumbleweed and now Rhino, I can tell you that I've been working on TW for months... absolutely no problems!.

For me updrading Debian or install from scratch is nothing compared to windows. Don't know what is your problem with that, but good luck!

So why the hell are you looking at rolling releases?
They give you the hassle of upgrades every day (so to speak).
And you have to upgrade all the time or you guarantee breakage if you don't keep up.

Why Diablo, are you intentionally confusing an update or updates with an 'upgrade' to another version?

Rolling gets new versions all the time - that is the definition of rolling.

Why on earth do you think PCLinuxOS is a Debian derivative? And your original post about a rolling version of Debian 12 shows a lack of understanding about what "Stable" means. If you want a newer scid on Stable, the best option is a backport, if possible.

It was a mistake when writing it, I use google translator, and fix it... I have a lot of work in order to express an idea, and as for the rest of your comment, I will only add, and to finish with this matter:

Now I fully understand that Debian is not, in any of its versions a "rolling release", as are the aforementioned ones, the one derived or based on Debian, Rhino-Linux, and the other two, Tumbleweed and PCLinuxOS.

That's what I've been looking for, continuous systems that do not need to be 'updated' by going through that tortuous step, and for me complicated, of upgrading to the new version... which many times -- depending on the system -- ends up breaking. :(

I know that you understand very well what I'm talking about,

When will *you* dare to produce a "rolling release" version in Debian? :!:

That's not how Debian works! That's not how any of this works!

I think I can mark this thread as solved.

Conclusion: Debian is not rolling and won't ever be rolling.

I have turned to AI and after a very friendly "conversation" it has convinced me that Debian Testing is indeed a "rolling release", although perhaps not in the technical sense of the definitions that can be offered, but in regards to the fact of the continuous updates, then it is ... and therefore I do not have to worry about the terrible inconvenience of having to do any "upgrade" to a new version -- it seems to me that AI is now more convincing than humans.

Anyway, thanks once again for your comments,

Regards.
