[Solved] Packet loss and super slow network in debian 12 KDE Plasma

#1 Post by GroudonandKyogre »

Hi, I had recently switched to debian and installed debian 12 with kde plasma, I had not installed with the installer but rather the kde-plasma-desktop package, the install did not give any errors but when I tried to connect to the internet it just did not want to detect any nearby networks nor connect to them, it was detecting my adapter but still not using it, nmcli device show had shown that it is unmanaged or something, I installed rfkill by manually connecting and doing some tweaks with ChatGPT, because of the AI, I was finally able to connect to my nearby networks through the applet, but I had very slow internet.

The network speed is about 100-200kbps with wifi and usb tethering, I am using the appropriate mtu that was identified in windows which was 1372, I set it on the device and in the settings of the connection itself. But still I had about the same speed, When I checked my system with speedtest-cli it showed a max speed of 1Mb/s download and the same for upload, which is ridiculous! My system used to have 5MB/s of internet speed but now it is only 100-200KB/s?

Also when I checked with the ping command

Code: Select all

ping -M do -s 1344 8.8.8.8
It just showed that there is substantial packet loss, before when I used to use xfce, it used to be 0% packet loss.

Also I am using the best mirror in case you are wondering, I used nala to find the mirror and set the #1 mirror.
inxi -Fxxxxz output-

Code: Select all

ak@debian:~$ inxi -Fxxxxz

Have you installed the firmware for that Ralink device? It's in the firmware-misc-nonfree package.

Yes, i tried

Code: Select all

sudo apt install firmware-misc-nonfree
and it is already the latest version, I can tell you that when I had installed debian 11 I had to put the rt2870.bin file by myself in the iso for it to detect my internet.

Because you asking to fix the result of unknown ChatGPT advice, it would be useful to know a detailed description of what configurations (commands and output) you did you according to it.

Hi

Personally I believe the best, and simplest answer to obtaining your network info is...

ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=370108

February 25th, 2007

bapoumba

Before posting in Networking & Wireless
When troubleshooting wireless, it's important that your system is fully updated by opening a terminal, CTRL+ALT+T. Using a wired internet connection, please run:
Code:
sudo apt update
sudo apt dist-upgrade
and reboot if necessary.

If the issues persist, it is recommended that you install pastebinit, by running:
Code:
sudo apt install pastebinit
This will enable the wireless script to, upon your approval, upload the obtained data to pastebin, creating at the same time a link to it in your terminal, permitting you to paste it to a forum thread.

Once that's done, download and run the wireless info script, which will gather information to help diagnose your system. You can run it using this command:
Code:
wget -N -t 5 -T 10 https://github.com/UbuntuForums/wireles ... eless-info && \
chmod +x wireless-info && \
./wireless-info
Kind Regards

I am quite lazy so I am quoting the whole comment(sorry)
Firstly, I am using usb tethering and wifi, the speeds of both the systems appear to be the same, also I noticed that the signal strength in my applet is only 2 bars even though my mobile phone is quite close to my system, and from the usb dongle about 1 meter.
Also the conversation is quite long in chatgpt, and I seem to have messed up the convo, so I cannot post it, But I can tell that I had to create a /etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf file in order to get it working and had to add these contents-

Code: Select all

[main]
plugins=ifupdown,keyfile
managed=true

[ifupdown]
managed=false
It also said that the file /etc/network/interfaces was messing with NetworkManager so I had to delete some content in it.

Also my system is fully updated and there is no updated software, And I have added solaar from the backports yesterday but I had also enabled them yesterday.
Thanks,
GK

Also I use my samsung M53 for wifi but now I am using my poco m3 temporarily. The speed is still the same if you wonder.

The USB "wired connection 2" should reach the nominal speed of your telephone provider.

You currently have two active simultaneous connections (according to nmcli device output). There should only be one.

Try disconnecting the "POCO M3", leaving only "Wired connection 2", and then check the network speed using only the USB-connected "Wired connection 2".

You can use the following commands to get more information when only the USB tethered connection is active, i.e:

Code: Select all

script log.txt
ip link
ip address
ip route
time ping -c 10 8.8.8.8
time getent ahosts www.forums.net
time ping -c 10 www.forums.net
nmcli connection show --active
exit
The output of previous commands will be recorded in a file named log.txt that you can report back if you wish.

Re: Packet loss and super slow network in debian 12 KDE Plasma

Hi

Do you have a Broadband provider for your property/premises to connect the ethernet cable to?

The USB 2.0 port with the Ralink RT5370 with the correct driver (rt2800usb) and perhaps the non-free firmware as suggested will only operate at 480 M bits /s if perfect (60 M bytes /s) and possibly be as low as 30 M bytes /s.

If on the other hand the Gygabyte board is only running the USB as 1.1 then you would expect to see max 12 - min 1.5 M bits /s.

So can you confirm what USB port rating you have in Debian please?
Kind Regards

Again, I am lazy so I am going to answer the questions one by one.

Yes, Samsung M53 is my device which is connected via USB, I use it for both wifi and sometimes USB tethering.

It should reach the speeds of my provider but when I did a speedtest on my mobile phone via firefox, It got 220MiB download and 1 MiB upload with 20 latency on google speedtest, and on my pc with firefox (betterfox) with debian I got 4 MiB download with upload of 0.07 :lol: with 67 latency.

I was using Poco M3 temporarily for wifi, I use the same device at the usb port for wifi most of the time.

Now, after the questions are done, I want to say that my system supports USB 2.0 which theoretically supports 60MB/s speed, but the practical speed would be about 25-30MB/s, take 10MB/s out for no reason, that still leaves us with 15MB/s of speed right? And the network speed for the wifi(mobile hotspot) and the usb tethering is the same so it seems to be an issue with the hardware itself or a global configuration.

I will post the output of the commands you gave me after the commands end with a quick post.

Thanks,
GK

I don't have an ethernet cable at here, it is at my grandmother's house, the motherboard box is at there but I don't have anything to connect with through the cable.

Can you tell me how do I check what is the rating through debian?
Thanks,
GK

I just did an internet speed test with the same device same usb port with same cable and the results are something interesting.
Download 92.8MiB
Upload 1.23 MiB
Latency 61ms(same as before)
What do you guys say?

And I also checked the wifi speeds of the same test and everything same except the OS
Download=22.6MiB
Upload=0.91
Latency=77(doesn't matter much)
Yup, the problem is in debian, Now that I come to think of it, Is there a problem in kde-plasma-desktop because when I installed the system through debian installer with kde plasma it would installer many other things and I did not have to set up wifi separately.

There are many factors which can affect to wifi throughput, also that's a bit vague when you speak from firefox, even more factors.

Install speedtest-cli, run in the terminal, post it in code tags.

I don't think there is much difference than using speedtest-cli and firefox for a simple speedtest.
But my daily data has died out, so I will tell you the output with words-
The best of my memory says a download speed of 1MiB with 1MiB upload speed.

Hi

You do not seem to be able to give any comprehensive answers, and as you have stated that Debian is the problem, replace it with one of many other OS's available.

You have shown that you have the maximum throughput of 480 mbps via your USB hub.

There is the possibility of thru-the-mains extenders.
Kind Regards

I tried to be clear when I was giving answers, and rechecked that they were easy to understand. So I don't think that my answers are uncomprehensive.

Also I don't and will not replace debian with windows 10 as windows is my secondary os and I primarily use debian.

Also I have reinstalled the system with the debian installer and did not try to install KDE Plasma by the kde-plasma-desktop package. The network speed is still the same, though wifi worked out of the box.

Here is the output of speedtest-cli today because I have my daily data now(With wifi)-

Code: Select all

ak@debian:~$ speedtest-cli

Output with usb tethering-

ak@debian:~$
We can see here that usb tethering and wifi performance has improved after reinstall but still too low as compared to windows, I notice that the ping is better with usb tethering.

I noticed there is no packet loss now with the command ping -M do -s 1344 8.8.8.8-
