[Testing - Trixie] Audio through HDMI not working on 6.12.6
After upgrading to 6.12.x I had been experiencing the lockup during boot bug on nvidia cards (viewtopic.php?p=813854#p813854). I decided to go back to 6.11.7 and wait it out, figuring it was a software issue. Today after upgrading to 6.12.6 I can actually boot up and start X, but the I can't use the speakers on my monitor.
The audio mixer lists the HDMI audio out as "GP107GL High Definition Audio Controller", this is my monitor, but it says "(unplugged) (unavailable)". I know this is not a hardware issue as going back to 6.11.7 like before causes it to work again.
ETA: My monitor is plugged into my graphic card's HDMI out and takes audio from there.
My nvidia-driver version is 535.216.03-1
GPU is 1050Ti

Reports of problems across may distos: search "no audio kernel 6.12.6".
Big sound changes are happening.

Re: [Testing - Trixie] Audio through HDMI not working on 6.12.6
I think this problem goes deeper than the sound, actually.
When I try to run nvidia-settings on 6.12.6 it outputs "libEGL warning: DRI3: Screen seems not DRI3 capable" to console and all the X server settings, such as X Server Display Configuration and X Screen 0 are gone.
Additionally, in XFCE's Display settings dialog, the monitor option just says "default" and I can't change any settings.
This all works on 6.11.7

I've had a similar problem with trixie and sid including that the builtin microphone didn't work.
Today I stumbled upon this https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=301300
After rolling back alsa-ucm-conf 1.2.13-1 to version 1.2.12-1 audio worked as expected.
Give it a try.

Thank you for the tip. Unfortunately it didn't work. I think I can narrow it down to either the nvidia-driver package or the kernel at this point._mabe wrote: 2025-01-13 13:34 I've had a similar problem with trixie and sid including that the builtin microphone didn't work.

Things I tried today:
Reinstall Debian... fine.
Switch to trixie... fine once I remembered how.
Install nvidia-driver... broken.
So either this is a problem with the driver itself or it doesn't jibe with the new kernel *sigh*
Re: [Testing - Trixie] Audio through HDMI not working on 6.12.6
nvidia-driver of Debian is outdated, I even asked the question viewtopic.php?t=161410.
The solution:
nvidia-driver of Nvidia (565.57.01-1 at this time) https://docs.nvidia.com/datacenter/tesl ... tml#debian, in https://developer.download.nvidia.com/c ... 12/x86_64/
or
NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-*.run (NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-565.77.run at this time) from https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/, https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/drivers/details/237587/

Sadly even 565 doesn't work. Switching to a fresh debian seemed to fix the sound, so that's something. I'm starting to think this might just be my setup.jebez wrote: 2025-01-13 19:47 nvidia-driver of Debian is outdated, I even asked the question viewtopic.php?t=161410.

I have the same problem – HDMI audio stopped working at or around the time Trixie switched to Linux 6.12.*. Did you figure out more since your last post here?

Re: [Testing - Trixie] Audio through HDMI not working on 6.12.6
I could only get the card working again by downgrading the package linux-image-amd64 to 6.11.4 and swapping the linux-headers-6.12.9-amd64 package with linux-headers-6.11.4-amd64 using a Debian snapshot (and uninstalling the 6.12.9 versions so they did not appear in grub).bigfootsbigfoot wrote: 2025-01-19 07:57 I have the same problem – HDMI audio stopped working at or around the time Trixie switched to Linux 6.12.*. I haven't marked this as solved as it's not a solution to the original problem. I'd file a bug report but I don't know which version exactly broke it (the first few 6.12.x versions didn't even boot for me). I wish I could give you a more helpful solution but that's all I have.

That's at least something, because it directly confirms the 6.12 kernel as the possible culprit. Thanks!

Re: [Testing - Trixie] Audio through HDMI not working on 6.12.6
Interestingly, going back to 6.11.10 does *not* solve the problem for me. It seems to be a different component – or an additional component – that causes this issue for me.
