runlevel 5 refuses to fire up TTY7 (failed to start lightdm.service)

#1 Post by goljkq42 »

Dear community,

I have been living dangerously by running Debian on a Asus AMD/NVIDIA laptop for about a year now. Dangerously because this system is used in a quite roaming fashion as it can sometimes be attached to a X brand KVM while the next minute to a Y brand. Each of those KVMs have their own specific physical setup (read: monitors) while are also shared by other machines/OSes.

Of course none of this should come to much excitement. Except that I have a gift for breaking things. This time around I have lost my graphical console and after having attempted a couple(!) of things, I am left with no other solution than to format my illustrious system and start a new. Unless something bright might come out of this post.

If you're still reading, I will cut straight to the chase: DisplayLink blew it up for me, more specifically this: https://github.com/AdnanHodzic/displaylink-debian

I never really got this device fully well integrated with Debian. Sure, the externally attached keyboard and mouse have always worked great but never had the monitor. Well, it worked for a couple of weeks in autumn 2024 via a kernel upgrade but then there was a change at the vendor level from what I understand.

Either way, since I wanted to give another shot at getting my DisplayLink KVM working, I went forward and followed the installation steps. After reboot, I was facing a "Failed to start lightdm.service" error message on TTY7 while being in runlevel 5.

Over the course of the next several hours I would try many things (giving me many different results) based on the many different errors I would find from the logs. Those "solutions" included reconfiguring lightdm, purging+reinstalling lightdm, reinstalling NVIDIA driver and purging xorg and xserver (and then reinstalling them), just to name a few.

In terms of system configurations I am now back somewhat at the same point before attempting anything. That means all of those packages have been reinstalled and that I am still facing a non-working TTY7. Out of all of the error messages I could harvest, I think this one is the most telling:

The reason for saying that is those entries just kept on multiplying over the course of my (many) attempts. They actually feel like something else is broken at the core of my Debian installation.
