Cinnamon - Desktop icons not showing
Cinnamon - Desktop icons not showing
I installed Debian with Cinnamon only and I can't get the desktop icons to show, even though they're enabled. Apparently the default file manager is Nemo. I see people suggesting to run nemo-desktop but it simply doesn't exist in my system. Any ideas?

Re: Cinnamon - Desktop icons not showing
Did you install Debian 8, 9 or is it "testing", soon to be Debian 10 ?
The versions are important, with out knowing what version of Debian, what version of Cininamon, and Nemo, everything is just wild guesses.
If it happens to be Nemo v3.4.2 or newer, then this might apply:
There could be bugs, in the mysterious Debian version, and one could find if it is a bug, what, but with out knowing what version it is, .... well you should get the idea by now.

Again, this is just a very wild guess, since I have no clue as to what Debian version is involved here, nor the Cinnamon version, etc.from https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Nemo

Since Nemo v3.4.2, the desktop is managed by `nemo-desktop`. This can be configured to auto start by copying the file:toCode: Select all
/usr/share/applications/nemo-autostart.desktop
and removing the line "OnlyShowIn=X-Cinnamon;".Code: Select all
~/.config/autostart/nemo-autostart.desktop
Give better details, also learn how to do some searches, the key to doing good searches that yield good results is including such details as OS, version, package version, etc.Any ideas?

Re: Cinnamon - Desktop icons not showing
It's Debian 9.9 with Cinnamon 3.2.7. Nemo is 3.2.2
I've tried different things but I couldn't get it to work. Here's what it currently says in x-cinnamon-mimeapps.list:
application/x-gnome-saved-search=nemo.desktop;
inode/directory=nemo.desktop;
x-content/unix-software=nemo-autorun-software.desktop;

Re: Cinnamon - Desktop icons not showing
Desktop icons are working fine here on debian 10 buster.
cinnamon 3.8.8/nemo 3.8.5
And as you know can be toggled on/off via settings:
settings-desktop desktop layout/desktop icons.
Dont know about whats happened to stretch.Might be worth upgrading?

Re: Cinnamon - Desktop icons not showing
u mean upgrade from stable to testing? and hope nothing else in your system breaks because u upgraded to testing. seems to me this is like plugging one hole to expose 2 other.
Re: Cinnamon - Desktop icons not showing
I upgraded and it's working now, except on root account where it says that nemo-desktop can't be run on root. But it's good enough.
I hope nothing else breaks... at least I will have desktop icons

Re: Cinnamon - Desktop icons not showing
That's good, I was just about going to post , saying I agree:
Also, since Debian 10 Buster/testing is frozen now, and they are very active getting the existing bugs fixed, if in the unlikely event something does not work or seems broken, it is likely to get fixed pretty quickly, and there is a good chance a update/upgrade, a day or 2 later would no longer have the problem. I have been running Debian 10 Buster, and 2 other Debian 10 buster testing/sid systems on VM's for about a month now, and none of them have had any serious problems, they all seem pretty stable to me.Kryten wrote:Desktop icons are working fine here on debian 10 buster.

Re: Cinnamon - Desktop icons not showing
I normally do not use any file manager if and when I work as root, but just now checking, and it says there is supposed to be a "open as root" option, and the option is there, but does not seem to work, I suppose we will have to wait and see if that get's fixed in the future, personally I don't think it is a good option to have any way, but guess that is another topic.
