Code: Select all

Can it also be done in MX Linux 21?
Ahem...we made sure to port the 340 drivers from Sid back in August before we released MX 21. Just use the MX Nividia driver tool for an automatic install.

I already tried that, but it didn't seem to work.
I also asked the MX Linux forum about it here : https://forum.mxlinux.org/viewtopic.php ... 01adde257d

I don't see any change at all after installing it through nvidia driver installer. No splash screen, no nvidia-settings, and no nvidia-xsetting. Usually after installing nvidia driver all my font would look big, I would have to edit the nvidia-xorg.conf/xorg.conf to use noedid false options, and the plymouth would not showing correctly. And I also still get the freeze after suspend bug in mx linux 21.

=========================================

I tried it once again using nvidia driver installer, now it just works. wew.

Watsoon wrote: 2021-10-29 18:42 This nouveau driver is a buggy peace of crap.

It is almost impossible to use it.

So I have installed proprietary driver "nvidia-legacy-340xx-driver_340.108-11" from "Debian Sid" repository.

It seems that this driver has been patched.

It successfully builds with kernel "5.10.0-9-amd64 #1 SMP Debian 5.10.70-1 (2021-09-30) x86_64 GNU/Linux".

I didn't want to update the full system to "sid", so i have downloaded just several deb packages and installed them manually with "dpkg".

The kernel module has been successfully built.

Code: Select all

lsmod | grep nvidia
nvidia 10604544 41
drm 618496 4 nvidia
Well, it works. I've installed the nvidia-legacy-340xx on Sparky6 PoTolo (=Debian Bullseye).
The list of 14 files:

Code: Select all

libegl1-nvidia-legacy-340xx_340.108-10_bpo10+1_amd64.deb
libgl1-nvidia-legacy-340xx-glx_340.108-10_bpo10+1_amd64.deb
libnvidia-legacy-340xx-eglcore_340.108-10_bpo10+1_amd64.deb
libnvidia-legacy-340xx-glcore_340.108-10_bpo10+1_amd64.deb
libnvidia-legacy-340xx-ml1_340.108-10_bpo10+1_amd64.deb
nvidia-legacy-340xx-alternative_340.108-10_bpo10+1_amd64.deb
nvidia-legacy-340xx-driver_340.108-10_bpo10+1_amd64.deb
nvidia-legacy-340xx-driver-bin_340.108-10_bpo10+1_amd64.deb
nvidia-legacy-340xx-driver-libs_340.108-10_bpo10+1_amd64.deb
nvidia-legacy-340xx-kernel-dkms_340.108-10_bpo10+1_amd64.deb
nvidia-legacy-340xx-kernel-support_340.108-10_bpo10+1_amd64.deb
nvidia-legacy-340xx-vdpau-driver_340.108-10_bpo10+1_amd64.deb
nvidia-settings-legacy-340xx_340.108-1_deb10u1_amd64.deb
xserver-xorg-video-nvidia-legacy-340xx_340.108-10_bpo10+1_amd64.deb
plus 6 files from synaptic pm :

Code: Select all

glx-alternative-nvidia
nvidia-installer-cleanup
nvidia-kernel-common
nvidia-modprobe
nvidia-support
dkms
Plus two additional files from synaptic pm:

Code: Select all

linux-headers-5.10.0.22-amd64
linux-headers-5.10.22-common
This is the kernel on my system, while dkms uses 5.10.0.25 headers.

Install the bullseye files first, then open terminal in the folder with 14 nvidia files and execute:

Code: Select all

dpkg --force-depends -i ./*
When a message appears about the need to reboot after the installation, click ok.
During reboot you will see nvidia screen. After login execute nvidia-settings in terminal to check if everything works.

The nouveau driver works fine and looks normal, however when playing video files it uses way more cpu than nvidia-legacy.
MXlinux has nvidia app for drivers, Ubuntu has a user called Butterfly, while Debian and other derivatives have some manual instructions, thanks to Watsoon.
