no sound after upgrade to debian 11

#1 Post by Canuck62 »

I have tried following a number of other posts similar to this and haven't resolved the issue. My machine was at Debian 9 (and sound was working fine), I upgraded to 10 and lost sound and decided to upgrade to 11 to see if it would come back - it hasn't. The sound card appears to be recognised -
dmesg output

alsamixer goes to a default setting, but shows the MID card as option 0 and shows all the channels when it is selected.

I have added packages firmware-misc-nonfree and firmware-realtek and a few others suggested in various posts, rebooted and still no joy

Any suggestions as to what to try next?

Aha! I have at least got an error message now

Code: Select all

$ sudo alsactl init
alsa-lib parser.c:260:(error_node) UCM is not supported for this HDA model (HDA Intel MID at 0xfbbf4000 irq 27)
alsa-lib main.c:1014:(snd_use_case_mgr_open) error: failed to import hw:0 use case configuration -6

Hardware is initialized using a generic method

A bug is mentioned over at gentoo which refers to the UCM support issue. There are some workarounds there you could consider:

So, the update is that sound is fixed.

The alsa init error turned out to be a red herring.

I booted from live usb to verify sound was working - and it was

From this link viewtopic.php?t=150597 and another, I found that the sound card could be taken over.
I checked if anything was taking the sound card

Code: Select all

$ sudo fuser -v /dev/snd/*
                     USER        PID ACCESS COMMAND
/dev/snd/controlC0:  timidity    621 F.... timidity
/dev/snd/pcmC0D0p:   timidity    621 F...m timidity
/dev/snd/seq:        timidity    621 F.... timidity
/dev/snd/timer:      timidity    621 f.... timidity
and it was and so I removed package timidity

Code: Select all

$ sudo apt-get remove timidity
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
Reading state information... Done
The following packages will be REMOVED:
  timidity timidity-daemon
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 2 to remove and 3 not upgraded.
After this operation, 1,655 kB disk space will be freed.
Do you want to continue? [Y/n] Y
And sound is now working without a reboot.
