No sound

#1 Post by Lavender-Thief »

Hello

Since recently my audio stopped working.
It shows up in the 'sound' page of my settings, but there is no actual output. Neither through the built-in speakers, nor through headphones.
Pavucontrol also shows that there is supposed to be output, without there being actual output/sound.
I checked alsamixer, nothing is muted.
I tried restarting pulseaudio as well, without succes.

I'm running Debian 11 with a 6.0-liquorix-amd64 kernel.

The output of lspci:

Did this start with the arrival of kernel 6.0?

Please post output of

Code: Select all

lspci -knn|grep -iA2 audio
Do you have

Code: Select all

firmware-sof-signed
installed?

I can't remember exactly, but I guess so.

Do you have any kernel driver parameter modifications referring to snd_hda_intel in either this file:

Code: Select all

/etc/default/grub
or this or other .conf file?

Code: Select all

/etc/modprobe.d/alsa.conf
This card can be configured by either the legacy driver or the newer SOF driver.

https://linux-hardware.org/?id=pci:8086-43c8-1043-8797

There is development of the SOF driver going on in newer kernels, so maybe some change has affected the way the kernel tries to configure your card.

So, a couple of ideas.

First check that no kernel parameters have been added affecting the driver used.

The 6.0 kernel is obviously quite new, but the SOF firmware in Bullseye isn't: try manually installing the SOF firmware from SID.

If that doesn't work, try forcing the legacy driver or the SOF driver with

Code: Select all

options snd-intel-dspcfg dsp_driver=1

Code: Select all

options snd-intel-dspcfg dsp_driver=3
https://thesofproject.github.io/latest/ ... ction.html

Or, if the sound worked before, downgrading to an older kernel is always a possibility.

How about with a 5.19 or 6.0 bullseye-backports kernel instead?

Hmmm--firmware in backports is still 15 months out of date. It should be safe to install the Bookworm firmware packages (and only the firmware packages--no wholesale upgrades)

It says that the file does not exist.

I tried with another kernel (5.10), but the problem remains.

I'm sorry, I'm kind of a layman at all of this. :)

You have a modification to the kernel configuration for sound in this line in your Grub file:

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash snd_hda_intel.dmic_detect=0"
It looks like this parameter has been removed from the latest kernel.
The dmic_detect parameter was removed from snd_hda_intel and replaced by "snd-intel-dspcfg.dsp_driver=1" kernel parameter in the latest kernel code.
https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=205959#c4

Please also note:
The long term goal is to enable the SOF driver by default.
So, first see if the SOF driver works. Remove the following from /etc/default/grub:

Code: Select all

snd_hda_intel.dmic_detect=0
Run

Code: Select all

# update-grub
Download and install the latest SOF firmware and reboot.

If you have sound, good. Otherwise add

Code: Select all

snd-intel-dspcfg.dsp_driver=1
to /etc/default/grub, update-grub again and reboot. This should get you back to where you were before.

Rats! I thought we were getting somewhere!

Could you please post output of

Code: Select all

# dmesg | grep 'firmware\|dsp\|audio\|snd\|sof'
After booting without any audio kernel parameters added, ie with

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
?

Another possibility is that latest kernels have stopped supporting Pulseaudio. It seems that Pulseaudio is no longer working in Sid/Testing and that Pipewire is now required.

viewtopic.php?p=763196#p763196

I am not sure what the solution would be with the Liquorix kernel on Bullseye, as the Wiki says:
This is not a supported scenario for Debian 11, and is considered experimental.

It may break certain applications, lack certain functionality, or not work at all.

You still have the deprecated command.

Please check

Code: Select all

/etc/default/grub
and make sure you have

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
not

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash snd_hda_intel.dmic_detect=0"
Then post output of dmesg again.

I notice from post #6 that you tried to run

Code: Select all

options snd-intel-dspcfg dsp_driver=1
as a terminal command, which it is not.

It needs to go in a file *.conf in /etc/modeprobe.d, for example:

Code: Select all

/etc/modprobe.d/dsp.conf
You could try all the driver_dsp options (0,1,3) and see if any of them work, rebooting after each change. A dmesg output for each one would be good. A lot of work I know, but all I can think of trying.

I did change that grub file line into "quiet splash", and did 'update-grub'.
cat /etc/default/grub:

Looks like you still have the dmic_detect option active. Did you reboot after changing the grub config? Is it in any .conf files in /etc/modprobe.d/ or ~/.config ?
Also show the output of

Code: Select all

cat /proc/cmdline
@FreewheelinFrank has been frantically trying to track down this issue. It seems to have been introduced with kernel 6.0.x and only affects Tiger Lake and maybe other *Lake systems.
I have a Skylake system but use dedicated sound card rather than onboard sound and it seems fine with kernel 6.0.x . I've been following this issue but have no ideas other than what Frank has mentioned so far.

On a side note, pipewire-media-session is pretty much abandoned now and wireplumber is recommended to use instead.

For sure. Remove the dmic options from there. Replace with the options FreewheelinFrank posted in his last post. Or try without options.
Why is it shown twice? And hopefully that's a typo where you don't have a space between "0" and "options" on the first line; that would invalidate the whole entry. Config files need exact syntax.

That's basically the same as mine. The first ones are Liquorix defaults AFAIK. I also have threadirqs as a kernel option but it won't fix it, only possibly improve performance when it is working.

Latest hypothesis is that Sid/Testing has stopped supporting Pulseaudio and that Pipewire is now a requirement for working sound.

Kicking myself because I fixed this issue six weeks ago on my own system.

viewtopic.php?p=760848#p760848

Replacing Pulseaudio with pipewire-pulse seems to have worked in two cases with Sid/Testing:

viewtopic.php?p=763267

viewtopic.php?t=153366

Unfortunately in this case it's Bullseye, and the wiki suggests Pipewire is not supported.

And I don't know if kernel 6.0 no longer works with Pulseaudio, or if this a dmic_detect issue.

I doubt that would be the case while pulseaudio is still available in the repo. Pipewire is default for Sid/Testing now so should be functional for most cases. It does seem to mainly be Intel *Lake onboard sound devices having the problems.

Personally there's no way I would even attempt to us Pipewire in Bullseye. The Sid/Testing packages are a wide margin ahead in development.

@sunrat

Like this? :

Code: Select all

options snd-intel-dspcfg dsp_driver=0
options snd-hda-intel model=dell-headset-multi
options snd-hda-intel model=auto
I've tried with 0, 1 & 3.
When I go to alsamixer, my soundcard (HDA Intel PCH) doesn't show up anymore.
If I add: 'options snd-hda-intel dmic_detect=0' , it shows up again.

Did you add the

Code: Select all

options snd-hda-intel model=dell-headset-multi
options snd-hda-intel model=auto
lines?

If so, what issues were they added to address? Did they work? What happened with those lines added that didn't happen without them?

Could you try the dsp_driver parameter again and give us dmesg output when the soundcard does not show up? Any error messages might tell us why it is not recognised. Also please comment out the "model" lines. These hacks are quite old, and might conflict or not work with newer kernels, which may contain their own code for addressing issues with your sound card.

Code: Select all

options snd-intel-dspcfg dsp_driver=0
# options snd-hda-intel model=dell-headset-multi
# options snd-hda-intel model=auto
dmesg output with the above might tell us something.

PS: if you have added configuration lines to

Code: Select all

/etc/modprobe.d/dsp.conf
please make sure that file is empty before you try the above.
