[Hardware] Solved [Hardware] USB mystery ( for me at least ) ,

#1 Post by Fossy »

Dear All ,
For backup of my personal data I use two identical USB sticks ( Kingston 64 GB DataTraveler 100 G3 ) .
Both sticks do what they are supposed to do , but in terms of transferring and deleting data , I am annoyed with the following phenomenon :

1/ on the stick recognised by Gparted as following , these operations are fast , not to say instantaneous :
Image

2/ on te second stick , recognised by Gparted as following , nothing dramatic but annoying ( read time-consuming ) , the computer has to " think " every time ... sometimes quite long during these operations :

Although I always handle USB sticks with caution , I suspect to have done a wrong operation once when handling this USB ?
To the future my question is ; what have I ever done wrong ... to avoid this problem in the future ?
Thank You

Had noticed me too , but , as far as I can remember I always format my USBs in FAT32 ... where did iso960 come from ? really no clue :(

From a Debian installer ISO image, according to the label.
ISO 9660 is a read-only filesystem. It does not support write/delete operations. The only reliable way to modify it is either to generate a new filesystem or add a new session (for multi-session optical discs). No wonder why it is slow.

Indeed your explanation seems to me to be the logical explanation for the phenomenon .
So , better not use an USB on which a " Debian installer ISO image " was previously installed ... ?
Edit :
About : “ The only reliable way to modify it is either to generate a new filesystem or add a new session (for multi-session optical discs). “ …
given my poor IT / ICT knowledge, I am not keen on venturing into this .
thanks nevertheless for your explanation

Better wipe the metadata an partition/format it as desired before re-using it.

Tabula rasa :
before : iso9660
Image
- initially tried fruitlessly to reformat the USB into FAT32 with Mintstick (formatteur voor USB-staafjes).
- Then formatted with GParted resulting in an error message which unfortunately I cannot reproduce here .
- After re-inserting the same USB it was recognized by the system, data was completely removed as well as the formatting type ?
- then after plugging it back in successfully formatted FAT32 with Mintstick , and uploaded the backup.
job done : FAT32 + backup
Image
thank you
