WiFi, sound and graphics on Lenovo Thinkpad E15 with Debian 11

#1 Post by sawyer22 »

I just got a new laptop and installed Debian 11 on it. I encountered several issues I have not been able to solve.

The hardware (relevant parts only):

Code: Select all

# lspci -nn

00:04.0 Signal processing controller [1180]: Intel Corporation Device [8086:461d] (rev 04)

00:1f.6 Ethernet controller [0200]: Intel Corporation Ethernet Connection (16) I219-V [8086:1a1f] (rev 01)
Errors:

Wifi does not work, video hardware acceleration does not work, and sound does not work.

1. WiFi:
Simply does not work. I installed 'firmware-linux-free', 'firmware-linux-nonfree', 'firmware-iwlwifi', 'firmware-misc-nonfree' (where possible from backports). I also installed the 6.0 kernel from backports.
I then followed intructions found here: https://wiki.debian.org/InstallingDebia ... ullseye%29 and copied iwlwifi files from the git repo to /lib/firmware/.
No success whatsoever.

2. Sound: seems to work partially, but it does not output sound. In sound settings I can only see a "dummy output". I installed 'firmware-sof-signed' and 'firmware-intel-sound', no success.

3. Graphics: upon startup, system tells me hardware acceleration does not work. I removed 'xserver-xorg-video-intel', installed 'intel-media-va-driver' and 'intel-media-va-driver-non-free package', again, no success.

My Linux knowledge is mediocre, I would appreciate any help in getting these issues resolved. Thanks!

See the link in the output:

See https://wiki.debian.org/Firmware fo ... g firmware

Especially the section
Firmware after installation
Bear in mind if you do the package search as described in that link and find the firmware you need is not in Bullseye but is in Bookworm (you will), it's OK to download the Bookworm package and extract the firmware from there.

But have a go at the easy stuff first, and if you get stuck, come back and ask for help with specifics.

Thanks for the advice so far, I fixed the missing firmware problems, and since then Wifi works fine.

I still get the error message regarding missing hardware acceleration of video drivers, and sound still does not work. Any ideas how to fix these 2 issues?

Here's a few error messages I found:

Looks like you will need the latest kernel from Backports for your hardware.

As I wrote above, I already installed kernel 6.0 from Backports, but the problems with sound and graphics persist.

I also have a 12th gen Intel thinkpad e15. Regarding the sound: I cannot get it currently working with the 6.0 kernel, the 5.19 kernel works fine however. For the video I ended up installing the graphical stack of MXlinux, because their AHS branche was upgraded and includes support for this hardware. See also this topic: viewtopic.php?t=152547

There seems to be a bug in kernel 6 that breaks sound.

I located the necessary packages from https://mxrepo.com/mx/repo/pool/ installed them manually with dpkg and worked through unresolved packages. I started replacing the following packages:
libegl-mesa0
libgl1-mesa-dri
libgl1-mesa-glx
libglapi-mesa
libglu1-mesa
libglx-mesa0
mesa-utils
mesa-va-drivers
mesa-vdpau-drivers
mesa-vulkan-drivers
libdrm-amdgpu1
libdrm-common
libdrm-intel1
libdrm-nouveau2
libdrm-radeon1
libdrm2
libva-drm2
In the process of doing so, I also had to replace a number of packages related to llvm with their mxlinux counterparts.

That sounds a bit complicated for me.

Any other ideas on how to get graphics acceleration to work?

Hi!

Could you specify which part of the repo you used? I quickly looked through but could not find all the packages you mentioned in your list.

Hey, I'm the guy that built the MX AHS packages, and seems like Vasja did it the hard way. I think you'd just first install the latest Liquorix or 6.X bullseye-backports kernel, then add the AHS section of the MX 21 repo, and then upgrade everything upgradable from AHS.

One source URL for AHS is

Code: Select all

deb http://la.mxrepo.com/mx/repo/ bullseye ahs
but there are mirrors around the world now.
