Same here. All good.

The -19 kernel revision had that regression where AMD stuff wouldn't boot properly.
That was weird, being that the kernel updates on Debian Stable are just security fixes.
Image Stable / Asus VivoBook X421DA / AMD Ryzen 7 3700U / Radeon Vega Mobile Gfx (Picasso) / 8 GB RAM / 512GB NVMe

Was weird but was fixed a couple of days later with a -2 revision, and was 8 weeks ago. - viewtopic.php?t=153103
It was the first time in living memory that a kernel upgrade caused a boot fail. And it didn't for me on Intel system.

I'm just commenting here because it seems even weirder for a post to say an upgrade works on Stable when they always do, almost.

Stable kernel updates also provide bug fixes not related to security. And sometimes regressions. That's why you keep the previous one.

Always!

Further good news - as part of this minor Debian version update to 11.6, a new version of Nvidia drivers arrived so I could now update the Liquorix kernel I use to the latest 6.0.0-13.3; the previous Bullseye Nvidia driver would not build on Liquorix 6.0.x. Not sure whether the backports 6.0.x kernel was similarly affected.

On my laptop, sound (pulseaudio) does not work from the approx. second use on onwards. Booting with still installed 5.10.0-19-amd64 instead resolves the issue... So far I could not find a relevant web page. Its a Thinkpad T14 with Intel Comet Lake.

I have the exact same problem on a Dell Inspiron 15. Wonder if it will be fixed with a 5.10.0-21-amd64 kenel update? I tried linux-image-6.0.0-0.deb11.2-amd64 from backports, but it was even worse - no sound at all. Edit: but the sound seems to be back with version 5.19.0-0.deb11.2-amd64 from backports.

The same here on ASUS ExpertBook B1500C with Intel Tiger Lake. I have no idea how to investigate the issue further but happy to provide info if someone knows how can I help resolving this.

Seems to be mysterious ongoing unsolved issues with *Lake onboard audio. This is the first I've heard of with 5 series kernels, previously most reports were with the new 6.0.x kernels.
As it works with 5.10.0-19 kernel, just keep using that for now. That's the reason one should always keep one previous working kernel when upgrading.

Not sure if that is the same. The user there reports no devices show up in the sound settings and 'pacmd list-sinks' complains about pulseaudio is not running. To me, the sound device shows up normally and the 'pacmd list-sinks' command lists the expected audio outputs. There is even sound when I first try to play something after boot. However, if I stop playing, then I try playing something again, there is no sound anymore. If I then run 'pulseaudio --kill' and 'pulseaudio --start', I get back the sound, but again it works for the first try only.

On an HP EliteBook 840 G8 Notebook:
- With kernel 5.10.0-20-amd64 audio stops working within 10 seconds.
- With kernel 5.10.0-19-amd64 audio works fine

I used https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgrepo ... rity=grave to search for an audio problem in 5.10.0-20-amd64 kernel but not in 5.10.0-19-amd64 kernel

I did not find a bug report but I have the impression that I don't understand the search engine.

How do I search properly?

I don't use the CPU in question, so "unauthoritatively", some questions and then some steps to aid in diagnosis.

1) are the sound modules compiled into the kernel or stand-alone? If they are stand-alone then review any optional params for you chipset and manually remove/readd them experimenting with the available options
2) for the purposes of diagnosis, get rid of the pulseaudio feces and use the alsa layer to test sound. can you use aplay and arecord properly? can it play WAV files correctly?
3) refer to dmesg output and if sound modules have verbose mode then use it.

Luckily the ICH10 stuff is very stable, but once upon a time I had to deal with a lot of the same issues: FWIW, some motherboards have a BIOS option for AC97 audio codec. Try different variations: with and without.

Hi there,

same issue on an HP Zbook G8 with onboard 'realtek' sound card. pulseaudio seems to stop outputting actual sound at random intervals.

I would like to learn how to search for Debian bugs using this audio problem as example.
When I go to https://www.debian.org/Bugs
and fill in the form "with subject containing" with "audio"

I get the error message "An error occurred. Error was: You have to choose something to select by"
So I cannot search for bugs just by searching subject "audio"?

After reading https://www.debian.org/Bugs/pseudo-packages
I selected the package "general"
and filled in the form "in package" with "general" which results in the URL https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgrepo ... ge=general
But the same page returns with an empty summary.
I see no other suitable package

So I filled in the form "with severity" with all the severities, one after the other
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgrepo ... y=critical
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgrepo ... rity=grave
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgrepo ... ty=serious
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/pkgrepo ... =important

Some of these URL's return bugs.
None describe this audio problem.
The bug closest to this audio problem is https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrepo ... bug=999757

Could someone please help me to find a suitable bug report?

The problem discussed here could have the title "Upgrading to kernel 5.10.0-20-amd64: audio stops working within 10 seconds, downgrading to kernel 5.10.0-19-amd64: audio works fine"

And described with:
Test case 1) In terminal pressing "backspace" at the beginning of the line, which should produce a "Drip" sound.
Test case 2) In terminal executing aplay /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Noise.wav

On an HP EliteBook 840 G8 Notebook, or Thinkpad T14 with Intel Comet Lake, or Dell Inspiron 15:
- With kernel 5.10.0-20-amd64:
- Test case 1: audio stops working within 10 seconds
- Test case 2: audio stops working after one execution
- With kernel 5.10.0-19-amd64 audio works fine

my bad. it was failing to build because of virtualbox-guest-dkms which i am sure i had uninstalled but apparently that was not the case
