[Off-Topic] Enable Quad9 private DNS on Netguard firewall - on Android

#1 Post by vryni »

I've had Quad9 private DNS configured on my Android phone - for several months
and it seems to work fine.
Yesterday i installed Netguard firewall and it works fine too

However, as soon as i enable Netguard - Quad9 private DNS is disabled
and Netguard is displayed as private VPN

1. Is Netguard functioning as an actual VPN ?

2. Can i configure Netguard to enable Quad9 private DNS setting ?

3. Is there a noroot Firewall + private DNS combination, concurrently functioning ?

4. What is the best combination of noroot Firewall, VPN & private DNS
for anonymity, privacy & security

My search attempts failed to yield the answers

I'd sppreciate your insights

No. I wrote the Dev a month ago asking about this when I noticed my Android IP# was the same I was using on Ethernet:

""I have been using the full version of NetGuard over a year now, like it a lot and am supposed to be protected by your VPN.

Then why does it show the same Public IP as all my laptops that are not using the VPN?"

His reply:

"NetGuard is a firewall, not a VPN. There is no remote VPN server, and all filtering is done on the device!

Kind regards, Marcel"

Now I was sure I had a letter in my other box where he said the opposite, it says so on the app and if you look on the Githiub age it contradicts that.

After getting that letter I got Proton VPN back on my Android. I was a Beta tester for them before I got Netguard and had to take it off because Netguard was the VPN and would Not work with 2 VPN on your phone.

I'm very happy with the firewall, you just have to get the hang of the syntax and different options. I won't speculate on the rest.

I had already asked once so I followed through and sent him these screenshots. His responsefollows. trust the firewall and hacve Proton VPN installed, so I'm good with it.

P.S. Bottom screenshot shows that I have private DNS in effect witt the firewall and VPN both running.
Android provides something called "Android VPN service". This is meant for VPN apps to route all traffic to a remote VPN server. NetGuard uses this same system service to route all traffic to itself - on the device, not via a server, which is a bit of a trick to build a firewall for Android, which is otherwise not possible.

I hope this makes sense.

Kind regards, Marcel
