[Software] Weird screen flickering, tried everything (WIFI RELATED)
IMPORTANT UPDATE: SCREEN FLICKERING OR TEARING OR IMAGE DISTORTION IS ONLY HAPPPENING WHEN WIFI IS CONNECTED, IF NOT, IMAGE IS 100% CLEAR. ANY IDEAS?
Hello everyone, this is the first time i need to ask a question at a forum since i switched to debian a lots of years ago, i have being googling a solution for a few days and still nothing.
I got a new laptop with i5 10th UHD, and installed bulleye with gnome, everything is working fine except for this weird screen flickering or tearinng, its not happening all the time. Some times are just a few pixels with other colours almost always i watch netflix and some random moments doing nothing or just scrolling or switching windows. I tried the 20-intel.conf tricks but didn't help, also i tried apt removed the old intel gx drivers and a few more proposed solutions i found surfing the www.

Re: Weird screen flickering, tried everything and i need help!
My old gateway laptop experiences this problem. I've attributed it to the old nvidia graphics driver that I must use. The second I see it tearing (usually shortly after startup), I reboot and then it's rock solid for as long as I keep the machine running.
Re: Weird screen flickering, tried everything and i need help!
If there are any more recent firmware files than you have at:
https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/ke ... /tree/i915
then you could install them to see if they make a difference.
Could check out the latest at: https://tracker.debian.org/pkg/firmware-nonfree

Re: Weird screen flickering, tried everything and i need help!
In my case it is all the time and it is quite annoying, if i can't fix that i will have to try another desktop environment or another dristo, but for now i really will like to stay with debian and gnomekent_dorfman766 wrote: ↑2023-01-29 13:57 My old gateway laptop experiences this problem. Hello,
---
[1] https://backports.debian.org/
You can try installing a newer kernel from bullseye-backports repository [1] with the required upgraded firmware.

Just add these two lines to your startup script (i added this tu my .xsessionrc)kent_dorfman766 wrote: ↑2023-01-29 13:57 My old gateway laptop experiences this problem. Re: Weird screen flickering, tried everything and i need help!
I'M GOING CRAZY WITH THIS
Just for updating (because nothing worked) i have tried a few "ubuntu" things from their forums, wich had some good feedback, editing:
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf <- file not found here, i created as sugested in some post here.
/usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf <- i think this is the route i have to edit? file was already there... tried both just in case.
Here replacing XXXX by modesetting, i915 and Intel:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Intel Graphics"
Driver "XXXX"
Option "TearFree" "true"
Option "TripleBuffer" "true"
Option "AccelMod" "uxa"
Option "DRI" "3"
EndSection
and also:
Section "Module"
Load "dri3"
EndSection
Section "Device"
Identifier "Intel Graphics"
Driver "intel"
Option "DRI" "3"
Option "AccelMethod" "sna"
Option "TearFree" "true"
EndSection
sounds great but i am using intel gx, posted on ot, btw thanks.

Sorry, I was in a hurry and didn't notice you were using Intel graphics. Sorry for the noise

don't worry it's better some noise than nothing
Re: Weird screen flickering, tried everything and i need help!
i think you mean at 20-Intel.conf in xorg.conf.d/ ?? like this?
Section "Device"
Identifier "Intel Graphics"
Driver "Intel"
Option "SwapbuffersWait" "boolean" "True"
EndSection
If it is this way... it didn't work
Re: Weird screen flickering, tried everything and i need help!
Code: Select all
Section "Module"
Load "dri3"
EndSection
Section "Device"
Identifier "Intel Graphics"
Driver "Intel"
Option "DRI" "3"
Option "AccelMethod" "sna"
Option "TearFree" "true"
Option "TripleBuffer" "true"
Option "SwapbuffersWait" "boolean" "True"
EndSection
I was trying a lot of things but i think this was what fixed the issue, now it is working really great! <3 Debian <3
Thanks all!!

Great work! Please edit the title of your first post to add prefix [Solved] so it may help others.

Re: [Solved] Weird screen flickering, tried everything and i need help!
Glad it works maese. Just a note on the xorg.conf config option:
the "boolean" is unnecessary, since the "True" is the boolean option.
Code: Select all
Option "SwapbuffersWait" "boolean" "True"
Re: [Solved] Weird screen flickering, tried everything and i need help!
i guess i hurry too much, problem is back as allways... i still need help
EDIT: tried adding to grub until i915.enable_psr=0, i915.enable_dc=0, and until i915.enable_dc=0 intel_idle.max_cstate=2 in all possible combinations lol
EDIT x2: tried forcing x11, disabling wayland.. same result.
EDIT x3: tried turning off night-light on config/screen as suggested somewhere, didn't work...
EDIT x4: MORE INFO JUST IN CASE IT HELPS
Flickering is less frequent than tearing...
This issue happens after login, never before, actually in the login screen i never saw a single tear or flickering.
IT happens more often when changing windows or when watching videos...
After almost 2 months of flickering/tearing everyday, i had 3 days using the laptop full day without flickering at all, then it suddenly started again (that's why i was thinking it was fixed)
Some time after booting flickering/tearing calms down, but suddenly it starts again..
Laptop is usable, i mean when i am working it is quite ok... but when watching videos it is quite annoying and it is not a desire thing to tolerate.
:S
MORE THAN TWO MONTH TRYING TO SOLVE THIS ISSUE, i am really close to install other distro for the first time in more than a decade
I read somewhere that kernel 5.13-14 was working ok, and then they mess it up, but i don't want to believe that problem was not corrected until 6.1??? Also 5.14 is not being updated anymore so not a really safe option... should i try it?
omg thats true! thanks, but the problem persists even after installing kernel 6.1 ... and also the same after installing xserver-xorg-video-intel 2:2.99.917+git20210115-1 both from unstable repos...NorthEast wrote: ↑2023-03-23 03:01 Glad it works maese. I can't believe that i am the only person in the whole debian community using i3 10th having this issue???????????????????????????

Re: [Solved] Weird screen flickering, tried everything and i need help!
Hello. You can always try using wayland. With sway (Sway is a tiling Wayland compositor and a drop-in replacement for the i3 window manager for X11. It works with your existing i3 configuration and supports most of i3's features, plus a few extras) i completely forgot about screen tearing.
