Poll: how long have you been using Debian?

#1 Post by fabien »

This poll will last sixty days in order to have a sort of snapshot. If there are any flaws (this can be discussed in the comments), it will be possible to make a new survey after that period if necessary.

It's up to voters whether or not to include prior use of a Debian derivative if it's relevant, they decide if it contributes enough to their Debian experience. You can add these details in the comments.

One choice allowed, can be changed.

Debian release dates to help you remember:
1993-1995: first releases. 1996: Buzz, Rex. 1997: Bo. 1998: Hamm. 1999: Slink. 2000: Potato. 2002: Woody. 2005: Sarge. 2007: Etch. 2009: Lenny. 2011: Squeeze. 2013: Wheezy. 2015: Jessie. 2017: Stretch. 2019: Buster. 2021: Bullseye.

I personally started with Woody, coming from Mandrake and Slackware, and I never stopped although I also used the wonderful Gentoo for a while.

Coming from Linux Mint then switched to LMDE ended up with Debian ; started with Debian Buster10
Owing to the official "Unofficial" non-free images including firmware packages c.q. debian-live-11.6.0-amd64-cinnamon+nonfree.iso & Calamers installer .

After watching for a decade I felt it was ready with Jessie.
With a successful XP virtual machine I fully converted to Debian host at that time.

I'm fairly new to Debian, I first tried it in the summer of 2022 and have been using it as my daily driver since 20/10/2022 (not 100% sure about that date but I think so). Since Bullseye has been the latest stable version since 2021, it was the first one I tried, the first one I daily-drove and my current daily-driver.

I started my Linux experience with Knoppix, which I believe is a Debian derivative, in 2007. Started using Debian full time in 2009.

poll is very straightforward and in keeping with a good survey it only tracks a single varible, but I'm curious about the reason that variable might be useful? Why do we care?

Interesting questions. I read through this several times. Not sure how I wanted to answer. I though should I say something witty? Insightful? Sarcastic? Thought provoking?
Well, none seem to fit the mood as I'm posting. Surely, there must be some sort of feelings toward this poll.
Best I came up with was... Meh, it's just a question and sometimes reading deeper meanings isn't always the correct or wanted outcome.
Sometimes a question is just that, a question.

Just an effort to know the audience, for those who care. Very straightforward.

Just an effort to know the audience, for those who care. Very straightforward.
It also lends insight on the potential age bracket where we as users fall.

Also has the merit , although not explicitly asked for , of getting a view on background profile of voters ?

Excluding any additional voluntary text, this would require an assumption!

Since Debian 4 "Etch" came out back in 2007 & I joined this place a year later.
And I've used all stable versions since then.
Reminds me of a poll I posted here, in 2012, to ask, "What was your first Debian release?
It's been a long time & it's nice to see other old-timers around, some of whom have been here even longer.
DebianStable

Code: Select all

$ vrms

No non-free or contrib packages installed on debian! rms would be proud.

I started dabbling into Debian with potato though I was moving through a few distros until landing here: Redhat to Suse to Ubuntu to Debian.

I get my own vote category for age! :) :( :(
Typo perfectionish.

More than 17 years straight.

Woody > Then Sarge > as sole os until systemd. Then only on PPC. Then until present on freedombox .I wait in hope rather than expectation. IMO The corporations are killing our freedom. Unless Debian can again become the universal operating system I loved and can't resist it's corporate paymasters. I'll be gone. :(

Release of Wheezy convinced me to make the full time switch, from Ubuntu and Windows. The two year time between major releases was a huge improvement on 3 months and daily, when I had 15 odd machines that I had to admin. Still think Wheezy was one of the best releases, even though I acknowledge some other improvements over the years.

Only just retired one of those old boxes which still had Wheezy on it. Had a play before wiping it and was reminded how snappy Wheezy was, even on technology considered almost ancient nowadays. I could still use it for everything that I do, other than the security risks.

It's the sort of poll designed to annoy the eff out of the most basic of forum trolls. It's all a conspiracy against annoying trolls, really.

But seriously, great poll idea!

---

Sarge was my first and I fell in love with it immediately. What made Linux a bit non-accessible for people in developing countries back in the early 2000s was the fact that most distros decided to have just a live CD instead of providing a full set you could use well without an active Internet connection. I lived in Bosnia back then and was a student with hardly an income to speak of. But you could get full CD or DVD sets of Debian at your local LUG for just the cost of the blank CDs. I remember paying next to nothing for someone to burn a 7 CD set of Sarge for me and have it send to my address. Just amazing! This is the time when Windows users still install things via manually downloaded exe files or from stacks of CDs where they have to put in a serial number for each piece of software. Meanwhile on Debian, I just had run apt and it would prompt me to insert CD 4 or whatever.

Sarge opened the possibility for me to install a bare bones window manager and breathe new life into my aging Pentium 2 PC. I also learned Inkscape, Gimp and LaTeX for school and saved tons of money (or meddling with piracy :D ). While others got daily viruses from shoddy USB keys from classmates, I'd be the one to manually remove the nasty files from those things and sometimes even sanitise them with ClamAV. Good times!

I checked "a year or less", but I've been using Ubuntu for 12 years before that.
