It's all a conspiracy against annoying trolls, really.

Just becuase someone is paranoid or wears a tin-foil hat does not in itself negate the possibility that the fear is rational or based in fact. Remember, we live in a world where the "dysfunctional utopia warning" literature of our youth has become an instruction manual.

Yeah...dystopia...that's the word I was looking for. :(

Came from a large corporate IBM mainframe environment. Was a participating tech there during the conversion from mainframe to Windows PC in 94 and 95. First Linux for me was SUSE Pro in 1998. Switched to Debian gnome when Jessie was released. Best change I ever made.

Yeah but they all love Google, YouTube, and TikTok. It's all just an amalgam of narcissism and hedonism. Any society that supports and teaches the idea that people should be able to do whatever they want is a dystopia. No matter what they do and how they live, faithless people fully expect to be doomed along with all their peers, but don't like to admit to it personally. Letting movies and literature do it is a coping mechanism for a personally profligate self-indulgent citizenry.

Over 20 years. I had already settled on Debian as my distro of choice when in 2005 I became a beta tester for PC-BSD,. For years I kept a Debian box as an alternative in case there was a vulnerability with FreeBSD, but thought it was boring because it just sat there in the corner running. :p

In 2021 I realized I had much more knowledge of BSD than I did Linux and to fix that have ran a Kali Gnu/Linux box since, having used Backtrack 5. The box I set up then still going on rolling updates and but for that Admin it like I would, and consider it no different than, a vanilla Debian box.

I began my Linux journey with Debian Woody back in 2005. I tried to install it on a laptop but lots of stuff didn't work, I was new to Linux and had no clue what to do. I installed Fedora Core 2 the following week and everything worked. The next year (2006) I discovered Ubuntu Dapper and stayed there for a while. I discovered Linux Mint in 2012 and stayed there until last week when I installed LMDE 5. This got me interested in "pure Debian" and I installed Debian 11 (Bullseye) a few days ago and I love it.. think I'll hang out here for a while. I had to work on getting wifi working in Bullseye, but I have enough Linux experience under my belt now that getting wifi working took all of 20 minutes.

Etch/Lenny. First I ran Etch on a NSLU2 for a year or two and after trying out Windows 7 for an hour I installed Etch. After another day or two I installed Lenny that was in testing, and that's that.

Just an effort to know the audience, for those who care. Very straightforward.
It also lends insight on the potential age bracket where we as users fall.
Also has the merit , although not explicitly asked for , of getting a view on background profile of voters ?
Started with Ubuntu and used that for about a year. Switched to bookworm and have been very happy with it. My Linux usage does not reflect my age at all. I am 66 years old. Used Redhat and Gentoo in the past. Ran Gentoo for about a year and gave it up when my hard drive died.

I have been here since the initial release of Debian Etch/Debian 4.0, like 2007. It was just the other day...

First tried Debian 10 some 3 years ago when I was trying distributions and slowly ditching Windows. Debian 11 was a big improvement for new users, when I installed it I stopped trying distributions, I use it since version 11.1 and I am very satisfied, I don't want my computer to crash at any circumstances so Debian it is for me

Hard to believe, around 20 years using GNU/Linux. I started with Yellow Dog Linux and Red Hat Linux. My first (and one of my favorite) laptop was an iBook, and I liked it even more when I scrubbed Mac os9 and loaded Yellow Dog Linux :) Around the same time, I picked up an old used IBM PC and loaded Red Hat Linux.

I've bounced around Fedora, Ubuntu and Debian, enjoying the distros. GNU/Linux provides incredible tools for all kinds of use, my use: amateur photography, personal finance, managing homeschool group - I was on board of directors for homeschool group of over 300 families, and general family life organizing and communicating.

The farther I get in this journey, the more I appreciate Debian. I have 2 laptops with GNU/Linux - and the one with Debian is my daily driver :)

I started using Debian in 2009 after having many problems with the 9.10 release of Ubuntu. I had been using Ubuntu up until that point, but figured Debian was the natural progression to use given Ubuntu was and still is Debian based. I figured why not use the ultimate source of all the Debian based distros? I had played around a bit with Etch before that but never too extensively.

After that, I used it full time on the desktop with Lenny, Squeeze, Wheezy & Jessie. It was my go to daily driver system all throughout my college degrees. Although given I'm a gamer, I kind of got lazy dual booting Debian and Windows on my desktop and reverted to Windows-only, as such I haven't used Debian much on the desktop since then, but I am getting back into it now - I have a NUC re-purposed as a HTPC running Bullseye in our living room.

I started with my own Home Server for a wide variaty of things again in about 2019. I initially dabbled a bit with Windows Server, but after a while I took the plunge back into Debian on the server this time with Buster and I've been using it 24/7 since then. It's been a really good experience and a lot of fun.

So probably about 10 years in total accounting for a break in the mid-2010's. I consider myself too old and used to the Debian way of doing things to even think about switching to another distro now.

My memory isn't great so forgive any mistakes in the timeline.

FWIW:
15 - 20 years for me.

Started on Ubuntu in 2006 and after a year decided to go vanilla Debian (stable) after deciding not all the problems I was encountering were due to my inexperience. Looking back they may have been all my fault but I have my doubts.

I guess Etch (stable) was the first version I used and quickly moved to testing which I stayed with until maintaining it became a chore rather than a learning experience. Back on to Stable and never had any reason to move from here.

First thing I did with Etch was to configure Gnome 2 to be anything but UGLY. Ye Gods, it was an eye-sore after using Ubuntu.

Twenty years of experience may consist in extreme cases to one year's experience twenty times over, or on the other hand, twenty years of useful accumulated experience ... and there's many variations in between. Years of experience is itself a confounding variable.
