Hi, I recently bought a laptop and installed Debian 11.
Although everything is running smoothly, I can't help but notice these errors during startup:
Code: Select all
[ 2.886802] mce: [Hardware Error]: Machine check events logged
[ 2.886805] mce: [Hardware Error]: CPU 0: Machine Check: 0 Bank 4: a600000000020408
[ 2.886850] mce: [Hardware Error]: TSC 0 ADDR fef4c9e0
[ 2.886878] mce: [Hardware Error]: PROCESSOR 0:706a8 TIME 1678482507 SOCKET 0 APIC 0 microcode 16
[ 5.452752] systemd[1]: Condition check resulted in Rebuild Hardware Database being skipped.
after some researching I read about a similar issue in Ubuntu Forums and they suggested to install linux-firmware-nonfree, after which the erros still persist and now it also returns this one which I'll tell you the truth, it fills my heart with fear and uncertainty.
Code: Select all
[ 4.477044] i915 0000:00:02.0: [drm] *ERROR* CPU pipe A FIFO underrun
I made sure I'm using the latest Bios version, although there isn't an older one available.
What do these errors mean?
Thanks in advance

Have you installed microcode for your processor? For intel it is intel-microcode , and for AMD amd64-microcode .

Perhaps an idea of the hardware on the laptop? Debian 11 is starting to have problems running well by default on recently released hardware. You can install inxi and show the result in code tags here of:
Maybe a newer kernel could also help, since it contains a version of the acpi driver.

iucode-tool is in the contrib section of the repositories. Do you have that active?
It's a good idea to post the full output of requested commands. In this case the "r" option Steve asked for would have shown that so we wouldn't have had to ask again.

Although it can only contribute to your search for a solution it seems you are not eager to provide info on your hardware cf Stevepusser . Nothing wrong with that , these are e.g. mine :

I realized I didn't include contrib non-free at first so I wasn't able to see iucode-tool. In Synaptic Manager it now shows up but not installed.
Instead,
amd64-microcode and
firmware-amd-graphics are installed, though I don't remember manually adding either.
should I proceed with just installing intel-microcode and iucode-tool anyway? could it brick the system at this point?

@madzar
Don’t know if they could causing conflicts but as far as I know you don’t need the “ deb-src ” repos .
you can / may delete them without any problem .
Those are my active repos :
Code: Select all
****@****-gl753vd:~$ inxi -Sr

I would of course activate the iucode tool , it never hurts ; followed by a sudo apt update and a reboot .

Your system is Intel so yes install them. They won't brick your system.
No idea why you have those amd packages.

If you search for the error codes, you will see that there are results where it is claimed that they are a glitch if they occur early in the boot process. As this is a brand new laptop, I would think it is a glitch rather than failing hardware if everything is working OK.
