second display not working on imac after debian bookworm upgrade

#1 Post by giorez »

after I reinstalled debian from bullseye to bookworm, my second display stopped working. I actually use 2 displays on both windows and mac osx. the machine is imac 27, with VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Broadway PRO [Mobility Radeon HD 5850]. I also tryed differente cable, but no luck. I checked dmesg:

[drm:radeon_pci_probe [radeon]] *ERROR* radeon kernel modesetting for R600 or later requires firmware installed
See https://wiki.debian.org/Firmware for information about missing firmware

I installed installed firmware-amd-graphics, but the main display stays black and works just second display. How can I solve the issue?

Paste here input/output from inxi -GSIaz. Also attach here or pastebin the file Xorg.0.log. This file should exist in either in /var/log/ or ~/.local/share/xorg/. If firmware-radeon-graphics is not installed, you need to install it. Firmware-amd-graphics is for newer GPUs than your 5850.

I wrote the above last year in error. Radeon firmware in Debian is provided by firmware-amd-graphics. Its .deb package description contains:
Binary firmware for AMD/ATI graphics chips
This package contains the binary firmware for AMD/ATI graphics chips
supported by the radeon, amdgpu and r128 drivers.
Thus, a Radeon HD 5850 graphics card does need firmware-amd-graphics installed for competent operation.

  Kernel: 6.6.15-amd64 arch: x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: gcc v: 13.2.0
    clocksource: tsc avail: hpet,acpi_pm
    parameters: root=UUID=484c9fc9-bcf0-4a34-941c-5b513893d3c1 ro nomodeset
...
here is Xorg.0.log

[ 28.622] Kernel command line: root=UUID=484c9fc9-bcf0-4a34-941c-5b513893d3c1 ro nomodeset text initrd=boot\initrd.img-6.6.15-amd64
...
The nomodeset items above bolded block Radeon GPUs from using more than one display. Grub needs to be reconfigured to omit nomodeset from /boot/grub/grub.cfg and /etc/default/grub's GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT= line.

Nomodeset is designed as a troubleshooting parameter that enables minimal graphical mode display function. It is often required for installation to succeed, but must be purged post-installation for competent graphics operation, including to utilize a second display.

To test, strike the E key when the Grub menu appears, find the nomodeset string, remove it, then proceed with boot. If it fails, it could be a ramification of attempting to install catalyst drivers. I would expect complete catalyst removal to be prerequisite to success with the required FOSS packages.
