[Testing - Bookworm] X11 server crashes after resume from suspend

#1 Post by benzwick »

I am running KDE Plasma desktop on Debian Bookworm on a Lenovo ThinkPad P1 with NVIDIA Quadro P1000 graphics. Sometimes when I resume from suspend X11 crashes (as well as all the other running applications) and instead of resuming my previous session, I am presented with a new login screen.

Today, the first resume worked, then I suspended, plugged into my dock and the resume failed.

Is there a way to fix this?

Re: [Testing - Bookworm] X11 server crashes after resume from suspend

Maybe something can be determined from your display manager logs.

I believe that the default display manager for KDE is sddm,

Code: Select all

#journalctl -b -u sddm.service
Should give you all sddm logs since last boot.

You are running an Nvidia optimus setup which can also further complicate things, have you made any changes to this? The default should be to just use prime render offload. This wiki page has more information:
https://wiki.debian.org/NVIDIA%20Optimus

I find using a display manager just gets in the way (and perhaps may even be the cause of the issues in the first place), and my personal experience with sddm I found it generally to just be a pain.

For debugging it is often easier to disable your display manager and launch into KDE with "startx".

Code: Select all

#systemctl stop sddm
#systemctl disable sddm
$startx
If X crashes you will be dropped back to your TTY, with hopefully some errors about what caused the crash.

To reenable your display manager for subsequent boots:

Code: Select all

#systemctl enable sddm
Be seeing you...

Below is the display manager log for the last two days in which the X server stopped twice (everytime after resuming after plugging into USB-C dock). I've also attached the full log from journalctl since the last boot.

Re: [Testing - Bookworm] X11 server crashes after resume from suspend

#6 Post by Aki »

Hello,

From the log you sent, it seems that plasmashell (KDE component) crashes every time you suspend the computer to RAM and resume it after connecting the computer to the dock station. You should have a lot of "core dumps" in your computer about it.

Therefore, it could be a KDE issue triggered by the change in screen configuration during resume from suspension to RAM.

You have also at least one program that is not from debian repositories: have you installed other programs or libraries from third part repositories (not from Debian) ?

You could try:
1) verify if the installation is updated with the latest packages from Debian repositories
2) remove or disable all installed plasmoids (plasmoids that change the wallpapers, too)

Of course, wait for advice from @CynicalDebian, too.

Nothing I can see that Aki didn't point out, but skypeforlinux is crashing and core dumping so that may be contributing to your problem. Plasmashell is crashing, so you may have some buggy widget causing you issues, but it also seems "kscreen_backend" is crashing aswell.

Code: Select all

There are also associated kscreen coredumps.

The KDE devs will want to know about something like this, you should file a bug upstream:

A recent upgrade seems to have fixed the problem. The upgrade installed a slightly newer kernel. Previously I had 6.1.20-1:

Code: Select all

Apr 05 12:28:22 p1 kernel: Linux version 6.1.0-7-amd64 (debian-kernel@lists.debian.org) (gcc-12 (Debian 12.2.0-14) 12.2.0, GNU ld (GNU Binutils for Debian) 2.40) #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Debian 6.1.20-1 (2023-03-19)
Now I have 6.1.20-2

Code: Select all

Apr 19 12:05:54 p1 kernel: Linux version 6.1.0-7-amd64 (debian-kernel@lists.debian.org) (gcc-12 (Debian 12.2.0-14) 12.2.0, GNU ld (GNU Binutils for Debian) 2.40) #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Debian 6.1.20-2 (2023-04-08)
I have attached the log from the most recent boot.

Great ! :-)

This [1] is the changelog for the current version of the linux kernel in Debian Unstable. I cannot spot a change that could be related to your issue. You probably updated other debian packages, too.
benzwick wrote: 2023-04-20 03:12 I have attached the log from the most recent boot.
I cannot find it in the previous message.

I could be useful the to supplement the thread with the complete output of the following command (information about hardware/software of your Debian installation):

Code: Select all

inxi -Fxxxz
The previous output is free of personal data.

Re: [Testing - Bookworm] X11 server crashes after resume from suspend

Hello,
skype continues crashing on suspend, but it's not the topic of this thread.
It seems that the system's package upgrade solved the issue.

It seems that the kernel update didn't fix the issue after all. The X11 server still crashes randomly sometimes when connecting the dock and resuming from sleep. I've attached a log file in case anyone has time to look at it and has any ideas on what might be going wrong (the X11 server crashed on May 15 at 10:44).

@benzwick

First thing I notice is that SkypeForLinux is core dumping.

Code: Select all

May 12 11:13:40 p1 systemd-coredump[2256]: Process 1719 (skypeforlinux) of user 1000 dumped core.

Code: Select all

May 12 22:34:12 p1 kernel: kscreenlocker_g[143947]: segfault at 44 ip 00007f81790defbd sp 00007ffdd7491ca0 error 6 in libQt5Core.so.5.15.8[7f8178e8e000+302000] likely on CPU 4 (core 4, socket 0)
Kscreen also segfaulting...

Same with plasmashell.

You *should* report these crashes to upstream KDE, or against the KDE distro metapackage. There is not much I can say since I am not a KDE developer, and KDE definitely has a little bit of a reputation for stuff like this, and you are using testing after all.
Be seeing you...

If you file a bug in Debian, don't send a copy to the upstream software maintainers yourself, as it is possible that the bug exists only in Debian. If necessary, the maintainer of the package will forward the bug upstream.
Of course, it really is no harm no foul.
Be seeing you...

Hello,
benzwick wrote: 2023-05-15 05:35 Thank you @CynicalDebian. I have submitted Debian and KDE bug reports:
- https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrepo ... ug=1036077
- https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=469784
For the debian bug report, it could be useful to use append the output of the reportbug program. In addition, you should specify the you have installed the skypeforlinux program and that is segfaults.

For the KDE bug report, it could be useful to supply a plasma core dump to let developers to debug it:

Code: Select all

$ grep systemd-coredump debian-log-suspend-crashes-2023-05-15.txt | grep plasma
May 12 22:34:24 p1 systemd-coredump[144419]: Process 1573 (plasmashell) of user 1000 dumped core.
May 15 10:44:25 p1 systemd-coredump[154116]: Process 144447 (plasmashell) of user 1000 dumped core.
Of course, beware that the coredump is a copy of the involved program's memory at the time of the fault and may contain user data or information handled by the program at the time of the fault.

I used the reportbug program to report the bug. I'm not sure what you mean about adding any additional output.

I assumed you had not used reportbug because the bug report misses the usual bug report structure (there are at least four structured questions). Furthermore, it lacks the reference to the program package and consequently the details of the installed programs affected and their dependencies (which is generated by reportbug when it is specified the package for which the bug is open). That's because you specified a "generic" package in your bug report. In your case the affected package might be xserver-xorg although there are certainly interactions with other components (for example, plasma-desktop). Without a package in the bug report, the package maintainers will not be aware of the bug report. The core dump for plasma-desktop and the X server could be useful especially if the issue is difficult to replicate for the maintainer or other users.
