I completely got rid of my sources.list file and created a new one that looks like this. Please tell me if this is working the way it should.

It was late at night and I couldn't read this. Today I printed it and read it.
https://wiki.debian.org/SourcesList
apt policy raspi-firmware
aptitude why raspi-firmware
It says that it was installed manually but I do not remember looking it up to install it.

and removed the kernel manually. Like this.
sudo mv /var/lib/dpkg/info/package_name.* /tmp
Even after getting rid of the kernel, the system continues to complain. Now it no longer complains about the kernel but it started complaining about initramfs-tools. I think maybe we should nuke the system and start all over.

Here is a new example of how it complains.
I just tried a dist-upgrade
As far as I can tell no matter what we try it will be messed up.

Re: Debian 11.6.0, HP Computer, and Video Problems
Why did you remove the kernel? Your system won't work very well without that
To uninstall the raspi-firmware package simply (re)move the troublesome "/etc/initramfs/post-update.d//z50-raspi-firmware" file manually then run 'apt purge raspi-firmware' again. Probably best to check out the /etc/initramfs/post-update.d/ directory though because I'm not sure why the output has a double forward-slash in the file location.

I just removed the latest Kernel. The system still runs on the Kernel that came with it.
I will check this.
/etc/initramfs/post-update.d//z50-raspi-firmware
and this
/etc/initramfs/post-update.d/
But I don't think that is the problem.

Re: Debian 11.6.0, HP Computer, and Video Problems
You also need to remove /etc/kernel/postinst.d/z50-raspi-firmware, apparently. Then remove raspi-firmware.
I'm just here trying to get that mysterious arm64 package removed so your packaging system works again. That's all. I have no suggestions in respect of the OP because I haven't watched your YT video, sorry.DebianUser042923 wrote:I think you guys are chasing after the wrong "problem".

Re: Debian 11.6.0, HP Computer, and Video Problems
I agree that the package system is broken. But I don't think it has anything to do with that ARM package. We have removed that thing in multiple ways, and the package system still has problems. That is why I think it is time to reformat and try installing Debian 12 again. I first noticed this problem right after trying to update the system for the first time! All I did was go to synaptic package manager. Click Reload. Click Mark All Upgrade. Click Apply, and after it got done, I had these package errors in conjunction with the latest Kernel that it tried to install.Random_Troll wrote: ↑2023-05-22 15:46 You also need to remove /etc/kernel/postinst.d/z50-raspi-firmware, apparently. Re: Debian 11.6.0, HP Computer, and Video Problems
No, we haven't. It's still there and the kernel & initramfs scripts installed by that package have broken your package manager.
The system broke when you installed the raspi-firmware package. It just wasn't apparent until you tried to use the package manager again.DebianUser042923 wrote: ↑2023-05-22 16:02I first noticed this problem right after trying to update the system for the first time! Re: Debian 11.6.0, HP Computer, and Video Problems
I had the error message right after I updated the system for the first time. I do not remember trying to install an ARM package of any kind. Anyways I am wiping the Debian 12 system. You can help rebuild if you want. Or you can just leave this thread. Thanks.Random_Troll wrote: ↑2023-05-22 16:14No, we haven't.
All I did was go to synaptic package manager. Click Reload. Click Mark All Upgrade. Click Apply, and after it got done, I had these package errors in conjunction with the latest Kernel that it tried to install.

This is one of those things where it doesn't matter who is right or who is wrong. The bottom line is the package system got messed up, and it doesn't matter how it got messed up. It has become a waste of time trying to fix it. I just used gparted to wipe the drive. I don't have time now to reinstall it. But when I do I will report stuff.

Yeah I probably would have reinstalled too. Based on what was happening it seems like raspi-firmware was installed when you originally installed Debian 12, this seems to be the case based on your Debian policy results you sent. It is very strange how such an arm64 package ended up on your system without you explicitly enabling it yourself.DebianUser042923 wrote: ↑2023-05-22 17:29 This is one of those things where it doesn't matter who is right or who is wrong. Re: Debian 11.6.0, HP Computer, and Video Problems
I have been honest about everything. I kept saying "I do not remember specifically installing it." That is an honest statement. Being that I am having GPU problems in Debian, and the fact that the words on my TV are very small, it is slightly possible that I might have saw something like GPU or something in the description and then mistook ARM for AMD. But at the end of the day it doesn't really matter. What does matter is it got us off track to the point and purpose of this thread! Doing a reinstall should put us back on track.CynicalDebian wrote: ↑2023-05-23 00:08Yeah I probably would have reinstalled too. Not all is lost, we learned somethings along the way.
When I get this installed, I will check right away to make sure that raspi-firmware did not install out of the box. I will also check /etc/apt/sources.list and post it. Then when we update the system that will also be reported. That way IF it does any funny business we shall catch it in the act. I will try to install timeshift before doing the updates. That way we can always go back to the beginning.

Re: Debian 11.6.0, HP Computer, and Video Problems
I just got done installing Debian 12, and I haven't updated anything yet. I opened up synaptic and searched for raspi-firmware.
Oh MY WORD! raspi-firmware is installed right out of the box!

Please provide the exact URL from which you downloaded that ISO image. Thanks.DebianUser042923 wrote: ↑2023-05-23 03:19Oh MY WORD! raspi-firmware is installed right out of the box!
