TUF question

#1 Post by Rita G. »

scenario:
asus TUF x570-plus mobo
RYZEN CPU does not support integrated graphics
GPU - RTX 2060 only has 2 connection ports

Problem:
I now need 3 monitors functioning.

Question:
if I add a second GPU, does it have to be the same as the RTX 2060? . .
or can I use another ? . .

also is the option to use a MST-hub.

I've never tested one on Nvidia, but maybe?

I've never had and problem using different GPU models when more than one was in a machine, but you should hedge your bets and also make it an AMD if you are going that route. I'm not sure how well X11 handles different GPU vendor drivers under a single instance.

You should be able to <Ctrl><Alt><F2> into tty2 or any other tty and achieve a prompt. From there you log on and use the command line. I'm of no help with nvidia, so no advice on what to edit.

Perhaps this thread is helpful once you regain some control of the system.

put your machine in multi-user.target runlevel and start X manually with startx while testing.

you need to learn to edit the xorg.conf file instead of messing with the "broken by design" nvidia-settings program. It's terribly broken and lack of a real nvidia support channel means it probly won't be fixed.

start with one screen, one gpu config under xorg.conf. make sure to identify the card by its PCI slot, then a minimal x session should come alive. use a minimal window manager while testing.

Thanks for your help guys. I don’t want to waste any more time with it; I’m just going to do a re-install/upgrade. I want to put debian 12 in it anyway.
