[Software] Is OpenOffice now broken for Debian?

#1 Post by debbiethekiwi »

Firstly: I know LibreOffice comes in the distro, I had previously used OpenOffice for many years on other OS, and I've got used to it. I have tried libreoffice a few times and found little things it didn't do, or not as well as OOo. So I've had OOo 4.1.12 running on Debian 11.3 for a couple of years. About 3 months ago I tried to open OOoWriter and it crashed at the splash screen. The job wasn't urgent, now I've only just got round to debugging it.

According to suggestions I've tried the trick of shifting the user profile to force a new one, I've updated to OOo 4.1.14, I've (re)installed a couple of libgnome-foo. Opening OOo from the terminal gives this:

Code: Select all

$ openoffice4

Thanks for that link, arochester.
But I note idroot is using OOo v.4.1.11 which was released 2021-10-06. I had been using 4.1.12 on this machine, but possibly before I updated to Bullseye.
Also idroot is using a different mirror than the default offered to me from http://www.openoffice.org/download/index.html.
He recommends installing default-jdk, but OOo has always been able to run Writer and Calc with no jre. I have/had installed default-jre with

Code: Select all

$ java --version
openjdk 11.0.18 2023-01-17
OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 11.0.18+10-post-Debian-1deb11u1)
OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 11.0.18+10-post-Debian-1deb11u1, mixed mode, sharing)
So I've run a variation on the purge method shown at https://linuxconfig.net/manuals/howto/h ... kages.html to get rid of my newer installs. After installing OOo 4.1.11 it still crashes at the splash sceen. The stack dump doesn't really tell me much. I've looked in the usual places and can't find anything that tells me what is causing this crash.
