[Solved] AMD GPU Radeon RX6600XT screen resolution and video rendering

#1 Post by RandomThing123 »

Hi, I am new to debian and for the past couple of days I have been trying to fix my resolution as it is stuck on 1024 x 768. The display in settings is undetected.

xrandr returns

Code: Select all

xrandr: Failed to get size of gamma for output default
Screen 0: minimum 1024 x 768, current 1024 x 768, maximum 1024 x 768
default connected primary 1024x768+0+0 0mm x 0mm
   1024x768 76.00*
My monitor is an asus monitor of resolution 1920 x 1080 and refresh rate of 165hz

I came across some resources and they are mainly about the gpu. I have tried to install the amd drivers and after that I tested my gpu with radeongpu and glxgears but i got strange results. radeongpu is showing 100% on everything and the glxgears are running on my cpu with intergrated graphics or so i believe. Interestingly my gpu is the source of output from it's display port but nothing is using my gpu.

I hardware consists of radeon rx6600xt and ryzen 5 5600g with a asus motherboard.

I also am using windows aswell on this system and everything works on that system just fine.

Re: [Hardware] AMD gpu outputs video but not being utilised.

#2 Post by Aki »

Hello,

Welcome to the forum. :-)

I would suggest to change the subject of the first post from "[Hardware] AMD gpu outputs video but not being utilised." to "[Hardware] AMD GPU Radeon RX6600XT screen resolution and video rendering".

What is your Debian version ? You can do it with the command:

Code: Select all

cat /etc/debian_version
Can you supply other informations about your installation ? You can do it with the commands:

Code: Select all

su -l -c "apt install inxi"
inxi -Fxxxrz
Have you verified system logs for missing firmware ? You can do it with the command:

Code: Select all

 -l -c "journalctl -b 0 --no-pager | grep -i 'firmware'"
EDIT Sat Jun 3 11:17:45 CEST 2023: the previous command is missing of the "su" command due to a typo (see next post).

Code: Select all

su -l -c "journalctl -b 0 --no-pager | grep -i 'firmware'"

You've missed the `su` from the beginning of the command.

Btw journalctl(1) has a grep option, so this would work just as well:

Code: Select all

journalctl --no-p -b --grep="firmware"
EDIT: removed misinformation.

Hi, my debian version is 11.7
The installation info can be viewed in this doc :https://docs.google.com/document/d/1_M_ ... p=sharing
the command

Code: Select all

su -l -c "journalctl -b 0 --no-pager | grep -i 'firmware'"
returns some things that are alarming but not missing firmware. Here are things I found interesting below.

kernel: ACPI: [Firmware Bug]: BIOS _OSI(Linux) query ignored

kernel: acpi PNP0A08:00: [Firmware Info]: MMCONFIG for domain 0000 [bus 00-7f] only partially covers this bridge

Also, there is nothing of value on my debian distro so method involving deletion or reinstalling the debian distro is possible.

your X11 server recognizes both "vesa" and "ati" driver (I cannot understand if they are from Debian, since you configured external repositories from repo.radeon.com using "ubuntu jammy" as a target); it's usually better not to mix Debian with packages from external sources, especially for system components:

Code: Select all

Graphics: Device-1: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD/ATI] Navi 23 vendor: ASUSTeK driver: N/A bus ID: 03:00.0
chip ID: 1002:73ff class ID: 0300

       	direct render: Yes
All the rendering seems to be done using the CPU by the LLVM renderer. According to the output of the system journal, no firmware seems to be requested by your GPU: that's quite strange, perhaps your x11 server is running on the VESA kernel module.

I would suggest to install Debian Bookworm (12) using the RC4 installer [1], since Debian Bookworm is going to be the next Debian Stable in few days (June 10th) with a newer kernel and newer amdgpu kernel module.

Hope this helps. Let me know.

I think support for the RX6600XT was added for kernel 5.11 so bullseye just missed out. I think the Mesa version supports it though so perhaps a backported kernel & firmware would do the trick for bullseye.

Seems to have tentative support in Mesa 20.3.5 and the 5.11 kernel, but no doubt you are also lacking firmware for it (firmware-amd-graphics) from Bullseye section. But the package in bullseye-backports should have the added firmware.

Hi, I tried to add the backport repository and update the linux kernal but I keep getting access denied. So I guess I will be waiting for debian 12.

If you post what you actually did and the full, verbatim error message rather than a vague description we might be able to help you.

Did you read https://backports.debian.org/Instructions/?

You can first manually download and install the backports firmware deb, then reboot, to see if that's all you needed. The download links are near the bottom of the page. https://packages.debian.org/bullseye-ba ... d-graphics

Yours is not the first AMD graphics problem of this type, nor even the thousandth. It's one of the most Frequently Asked Questions here, so we know how to troubleshoot it. Remember, the firmware may not be enough, but it can't hurt your system, and take little steps first.
