[Software] does 12 use more ram

#1 Post by urdrwho10 »

I'm not having any problems with 12 --- well yeah I had one today... I forgot. Came back to the computer and my screen had shut, as it is supposed to do after 10 minutes but it wouldn't wake up. No biggie - I'll figure it out.

But my question is this - does 12 take more ram than 11? It sure seems to be true on the three computers I've upgraded from 11 to 12. The one I am typing on used to be around 700 at idle and now it is an easy 1200 at idle. Just curious why?

That is usually always the case with newer software.

The calculation method has changed, so it seems to use about twice as much RAM as Bullseye. But that is not all.

From my personal experience, with 8 GB of RAM and running KDE Plasma, RAM usage is still significantly higher. The computer swaps much more. In a period of 14 days of uptime and quite a few open applications and tabs, my computer was using 4 GB of the swap memory (with swappiness on 10).

It was hard getting such numbers on Bullseye without video editing.

If you're using free(1) to get that information then it's probably been affected by the changes in procps since the bullseye release. Check /proc/meminfo in both systems for a better comparison.

But I would expect 12 to use more RAM than 11. Software bloats over time.

I find it uses about 2x as much ram here as 11 did. Which may be worrisome for those with limited ram. I've only compared the KDE Desktops though.

It appears that Debian 12 - KDE is using more than it used to use in 11. I switched from Mint a few years ago and found that KDE wasn't the resource lover of old. Articles were being written about KDE is no longer the resource animal of old. It seems that things took a step backward - maybe. Below is KDE and Mint Cinnamon - first one is KDE, second is Mint. In both examples I have the same browser open with about 10 tabs open. Mint Cinnamon is the latest upgrade (Vera). I'm not a RAM expert, maybe KDE and Cinnamon are running close to each other????

I'm using Openbox and it's idle ram usage has doubled from 11 to 12.

How are you measuring that? If you're using the `free` command then it will give misleading results because it has changed it's measurement methods: https://www.reddit.com/r/debian/comment ... es_unused/

If you want to compare bullseye & bookworm use either /proc/meminfo or something like https://github.com/pixelb/ps_mem

Checked again this morning and Ram usage in KDE desktop with nothing except desktop running 1.2 gbs. Which is on par with other DEs I've tried.
Goes up to about 2 gbs with one tab open on vivaldi browser. So It's not as bad as I first thought. and with 8 gbs ram will work well. But those with little ram may want to opt for a lighter desktop.

Hm? I've read the reasons (excuses) like measurement is now more accurate but does that mean the other distros are inaccurate? Why does this bother me? It bothers me not because my system can't handle it; it bothers me because it seems that bloat has appeared; it bothers me because I'm currently on a Mint 21.1 cinnamon install and at start the usage was around 750; it bothers me because --- well just because.

I thought I was beginning to see that KDE ram usage was being tamed because I was for a while reading things like - "KDE (5.17) is using less RAM than Xfce 4.14." But now Deb 12 seems to have changed all that and I don't know why?

I have no addiction to KDE, I like it but Mint Cinnamon runs well and the eye candy is just as good.

My browser has 13 tabs open right now and I'm using 1650 of ram, that is barely above what the latest KDE is at start. I know for a fact that Deb 11 was starting with about 400 less ram than deb 12. Well that is unless I accept the novel reasoning that the new numbers are the accurate and the old were inaccurate.

Ok, it isn't the idea of accuracy, it is the kernel. I booted using an older kernel 5.10 and it started with 300 mb less memory. The latest kernel (the one that installed with in Bookworm) is using more memory at boot. Now if the latest kernel runs faster or more efficient during daily use than that is another issue for discussion. So I'm not buying the accuracy stance.

Fresh install of Debian 12, replacing Debian 11. Debian 12 vanilla (Gnome) with Google Chrome added and GIMP added.

Perhaps it's the DE? I have seen no difference between Debian 11 and Debian 12, same use case, a workstation.
I monitor system use with (Gnome) System Monitor.

Please download and run ps_mem.py (as root) under both kernels then post the output here so we can see what is using up the extra memory. Thanks.

To my great surprise, bookworm actually uses less RAM on boot than bullseye here. Again, I am not claiming any scientific value, but I think it is interesting nonetheless.
[HowTo] Install and configure Debian bookworm
Debian 12 | KDE Plasma | ThinkPad T440s | 4 × Intel® Core™ i7-4600U CPU @ 2.10GHz | 12 GiB RAM | Mesa Intel® HD Graphics 4400 | 1 TB SSD

Please download and run ps_mem.py (as root) under both kernels then post the output here so we can see what is using up the extra memory. Thanks.
Your beloved ps_mem does not run in my 12. I downloaded just by curiosity the page as ps_mem.py I gave all r/w and execution permissions I opened a terminal as root and it does not work neither as you said, nor with ./ nor with sh. But something must have been made bad for me.

Sorry:

Code: Select all

chmod +x ps_mem.py
sudo ./ps_mem.py
And don't use `sh`, it's python script so use `python3` if you want to run it as a non-executable.

Ah, of course, silly me.

Try

Code: Select all

sudo apt install python3
sed -i 's|#!/usr/bin/env python|&3|' ps_mem.py
sudo ./ps_mem.py
Sorry for the bother.

I take it you ran the sed command more than once then. Apologies, I should have made the invocation idempotent...

Just edit the ps_mem.py and make the first line

Code: Select all

#!/usr/bin/env python3
