MATE -- network monitor applet doesn't show data in Debian 12
MATE -- network monitor applet doesn't show data in Debian 12
Hi to Everybody!
On three machines I've got the same problem: the network monitor applet doesn't show the traffic data.
As you can see from the image, although the network is working in a good way, the counters are always to zero.
An anomaly is in the settings: I select the right network, but it always stays on 'default' and not on the network I choose.
Two machines have a fresh install (but they had Debian 11 with Mate, where Network Monitork applet used to give correct data), one machine is upgraded from Debian 11.
Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: MATE -- network monitor applet doesn't show data in Debian 12
If the question is too difficult, another (maybe) easier question could be: is there an alternative in Mate for the network data? I need it above all since I always use my mobile as hotspot for internet and so it's very useful to check the consumptions...

Hello,
I don’t use “Mate” as Desktop Environment, but I suppose the network monitor applet can be configured to choose the monitored network interface.
If you want to collect network statistics over time, an useful tool can be:

Hi @Aki!
Thanks for your reply.
I would need a tool like the one is not working, it's useful to know in real time the internet usage.
Since I have this problem on the three machines I have configured, I thought it was something diffused...
Thanks for your reply.
The problem is right this: I configure, as I have always done during the last versions of Mate, the network to be monitored, but it always remains on the 'default' option... and the data don't move from zero.I suppose the network monitor applet can be configured to choose the monitored network interface.

Re: MATE -- network monitor applet doesn't show data in Debian 12
What’s the name of the program that handles the network monitor applet in “Mate”?
EDIT: perhaps this applies to your case:

Yes, specially the second one I think it's right my case!!
Thank you, now that you have singled out the problem, what should I do? I see that it has happened to Arch, Ubuntu, LinuxMint users...and now also to Debian user

Re: MATE -- network monitor applet doesn't show data in Debian 12
You can send a follow-up report to the existing Debian bug report (https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1017429) for "mate-applets" Debian package.
Please report as much as possible information about your network configuration and about default network card. Report if you are using, for example, a VPN. The output from following commands can be useful:
Code: Select all
ip address
ip link
ip route
lspci -vnn
lsub
inxi -Fxxxz
Re: MATE -- network monitor applet doesn't show data in Debian 12
Ok, I have written a follow-up report as you suggested to the existing Debian bug report, including the output of the commands you suggested (by the way, what is "lsub"?).
Re: MATE -- network monitor applet doesn't show data in Debian 12
@Aki
A question: what could I use in alternative to Network manager applet to check my real time internet usage in Mate desktop?
Thanks in advance

Hello,
I would suggest to use the program named reportbug to create such a report in the future. If you are interested in, please open a new discussion in the "General Question" sub-forum.
Can you confirm that only the wireless network interface card is affected by the issue ?
Does the Network Monitor applet work correctly with the Ethernet (wired) network card ?
The follow-up report has reached the bug report in the Debian Bug Tracking System (DBTS) at:

Re: MATE -- network monitor applet doesn't show data in Debian 12
Hello,
Waiting for the answers to previous post, I installed mate and mate-netspeed-applet in a Debian Bookworm 12.1.
Unfortunately, I wasn't able to replicate the problem with either a wireless or wired network adapter.
The mate-netspeed-applet uses the glibtop_get_netlist(...) function from the libgtop library to get the list of network interfaces.
Can you verify that the mate-netspeed-applet and libgtop library are updated ? You can check with the following commands:
Previous commands and their outputs will be in the log.txt file whose contents you can send in the body of a follow-up message (enclosing them in code tags).

Re: MATE -- network monitor applet doesn't show data in Debian 12
Hi,
excuse me for my late reply.
log.txt
excuse me for my late reply.
Well, I can't confirm, I don't have on those machines the possibility of a wired connection, only an hotspot one, so I don't know if the applet works on an ethernet connection. Even in the office we have only wifi, I don't have an idea where I could eventually try a wired connection. Can you confirm that only the wireless network interface card is affected by the issue ?
Does the Network Monitor applet work correctly with the Ethernet (wired) network card ?

Hi,
in the meanwhile, what could I use instead of network manager applet? Is there an alternative?
Thanks in advance.

Re: MATE -- network monitor applet doesn't show data in Debian 12
It's a bit overkill, but you may consider https://packages.debian.org/bookworm/monitorix. If you want to take a look at it before installing, a video is available here.
Re: MATE -- network monitor applet doesn't show data in Debian 12
Thanks @Aki for your suggestion: I've seen the video and you are right, it's a bit overkill!
The mate network manager applet is very useful: light and integrated in the desktop. I would need only the in-out real time datas: is there something similar for gnome that I could install for Mate?

Re: MATE -- network monitor applet doesn't show data in Debian 12
I wonder if it would be possible to use something like the dconf-editor application to set the correct network for the netspeed applet, to see if it sticks then?

Re: MATE -- network monitor applet doesn't show data in Debian 12
You may use the Mate System Monitor:
- it can be added to the tray panel
- it has a network sub-panel
- it can be opened from the tray panel
- it show tool tip labels
Re: MATE -- network monitor applet doesn't show data in Debian 12
@Aki: I have got this problem on a total of three machines: one is mine (and here I've sent all the requested infos), another one I can recover the informations (it's a customer that is close to me) and the third machine is in the hands of a customer that is not close to me so it's difficult to have his computer in my hands...
So, summarizing, in short time I should be able to recover the data on a second machine, while for the third one it's more difficult... tell me if I have to do this

Re: MATE -- network monitor applet doesn't show data in Debian 12
Hello,
Was the Mate System Monitor applet suggestion useful to you ?
How did you install Debian in these three computers ? Did you use the Debian Installer ISO or the Debian Live ISO ?
What is the output of the following reportbug command (it will report dependencies for the affected package) ?

It should be reproducible by others for debug purposes. I cannot reproduce it, as already wrote in previous posts. Therefore, I suspect it is caused by something with your installation(s).stilnovo wrote: ↑2023-10-02 16:01 @Aki: I have got this problem on a total of three machines: one is mine (and here I've sent all the requested infos), another one I can recover the informations (it's a customer that is close to me) and the third machine is in the hands of a customer that is not close to me so it's difficult to have his computer in my hands... Code: Select all
reportbug --template --no-bug-script
