I would think the poll should have allowed multiple selection. Or maybe multiple polls? For me it really depends on what the end use is.

My server is command line (but has a web GUI, but that was not a choice). Two clients that are doing specific tasks use WM's. My primary desktop uses KDE Plasma.

I'll admit it. I use Gnome......and I like it.
Though, the first extension I add is the 'no overview at startup'. Just like a clean desk in the morning, I like the un-cluttered look when I first start up. That is one thing I liked better back with Gnome 3.

Never stopped/questioned the OOTB Cinnamon version of Debian .
Nor would I know why ... never had any problems with it .
May i ask what was the reason that have driven you from Mint to Debian?
My apologies: no comment.
@alienspy
The reason why I responded primarily with " no comment " is that I didn't want to provoke a dispute , impugn neither Mint , my Linux school vessel .
My courteous obvious answer to your pertinent question is :

It's as simple as that , in my case ( I am not an IT/ICT techie ) on the understanding that this only applies from " Buster " onwards , and our laptops have at least 4 G of RAM and SSD or NVMe hard drives .
With all due respect to those who would not understand my answer ; I fear you do not know what you are dealing with .

I would like to leave it at that ... If You don't mind ?

I run on Sid & only use window managers.

Currently, I am embarking on a long term (30 day) test to see if SwayWM will really work for me. I have done extensive testing and even built a fairly detailed tutorial with dotfiles etc on setting up SwayWM for use on a Debian distro. Now, I'm trying to see if I can get to functioning in a full-on Wayland window manager (compositor). I will attempt to clean off any apps that currently require xwayland or qtwayland to function. I'll update all my findings and work arounds with updates to my Sway tutorial.

Cinnamon. I've found it along with the Mate DE renders the fonts more clearly than other DE.

I mainly use either Xfce,Lxde or Lxqt it all really depends on my mood on said say.

Code: Select all

free -h
total used free shared buff/cache available
Mem: 15Gi 3.0Gi 11Gi 67Mi 1.6Gi 12Gi
Swap: 974Mi 0B 974Mi
Note that these figures are given with Chromium open with 4 tabs and Firefox open with 2 active tabs further my system was purchased from an off lease veneer and I specifically specked it out with 16GB of ram.

Currently XFCE, used MATE before
I find GNOME && KDE bloated, non-customizable (at least not that much as I can customize XFCE, for example) and somewhat hard to use
I got used to Cinnamon being Mint-specific so I don't use it on Debian
I find LXDE too obscure even for me, haven't tried LXQt yet (I think it's time to finally test it, so next Debian install will run it)
On me server - no GUI at all, runnin' on command line
Heave 'er up, and away we'll go...

Openbox, typically with lxqt-panel, tint2 or xfce4-panel. I have complaints with it like (compared to the big DEs) like lack of animation, lack of pixmap themes or rounded window frames, but for my sanity it's the very best option even if it's far from the prettiest. Prettiest might be KDE, but every time I try using it I feel like I'm fighting it and then something bugs out and I ditch it.

Have you tried it with the greybird theme (greybird-gtk-theme)? That theme is in the repos and has support for both Openbox and GTK3, with both a light and dark option. Once you install it, then you can pick it from obconf. You also have to set it as the GTK3 theme as well.

I have, it's fairly nice color-wise. What I miss most is rounded edges and animations, though remembering picom has a fade option recently helped me with the latter. I've posted a screenshot of my Openbox setup in the desktop thread.

I use Gnome, but it takes a little customization to be useable. Gnome-shell-extensions application menu and dash-to-dock.

I love XFCE. Used to use KDE in Arch and Cinnamon when using Mint.

After everything, finally I settled with Debian and XFCE.

XFCE has surprising amount of customizability and I'm impressed.
