[Solved] Laptop keyboard not detected on debian 12 (Asus Vivobook Go E1504GA)

#1 Post by nunudebian »

Two days ago I installed debian 12 (bookworm) stable on Asus vivobook go 15 E1504GA, and from the installing process (debian installer, also debian live) the laptop's keyboard has not been recognized/seen by the system. After install, still, the keyboard is not recognized, debian does not even see it. Currently, I am using the machine with a usb keyboard. On the dual-boot windows, keyboard (and everything else) works great.

Keyboard works with grub, but never after boot.

I get a lot of error messages on boot.

Code: Select all

$ sudo dmesg --level=alert,crit,err
[ 0.160021] ACPI BIOS Error (bug): Could not resolve symbol [\_SB.PC00.I2C0.TPD0], AE_NOT_FOUND (20230331/dswload2-162)

Things I have already tried/done:
- Installed kernel 6.4, and when that didn't work, 6.5 from backports - still no keyboard recognized/seen.

According to this post https://unix.stackexchange.com/question ... tra-laptop that refers to this bugzilla bug/thread https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=216158#c3 , it appears to be something about the kernel. But these posts are about older kernels, so I thought I wouldn't have to do a kernel patch, just install the latest version I could find?

I have also found, through linux-hardware.org, that other users have installed ubuntu 22.04 and 23.10 in a sister model of my machine (asus vivobook go E1504FA), and they had keyboards recognized and running. Their probes: https://linux-hardware.org/?probe=380e23e27d and https://linux-hardware.org/?probe=e503ffe188
And this is the probe for my machine, as well: https://linux-hardware.org/?probe=e649a6d39a

I have installed debian before in a at least 5 different laptops, and this is a first for me. Granted, it is the first time that I have such new and pretty laptop haha.

PS: this is not the only problem running debian in this laptop - the wifi/bluetooth is recognized but has no known driver yet, so I'm really hoping that at least I won't have to run around with a usb keyboard in addition to the usb wifi dongle I already have to use.

Re: Laptop keyboard not detected on debian 12 (Asus Vivobook Go E1504GA)

#2 Post by nunudebian »

According to this post https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=356420 and also a comment here https://linux-hardware.org/?id=ps/2:000 ... 2-keyboard , it seems for these people, it had something to do with i8042 and the kernel/boot?

So I tried both options, editing the /etc/default/grub file, changing the line

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=""
to

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="i8042.probe_defer"
Did sudo update-grub, rebooted, and still the keyboard didn't work.

So I then changed the line to

Code: Select all

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="i8042.reset=1"
again, updating grub, but still the keyboard doesn't work. In both cases I checked with sudo cat /proc/cmdline that the changes were applied, and they were.

So at least these two pathways don't work.

Hello!

No, I am not the same person! I have this laptop since 4 days ago.

I will inmediately read and give a try to all this information you provided, and will be back as soon as I have any results.

Thank you so much!!

The fixes seemed to have made it into the 6.5.10 kernel, which currently for Debian has not been backported to Bookworm.

https://packages.debian.org/search?suit ... source-6.5

You could try the 6.5-12 or higher Liquorix kernel, which has been reported to also fix it on a Lenovo laptop with the same BIOS issue on MX 21 (AHS) (=bullseye with extra backports).

That fix may or may not get included with the next LTS release of the Bookworm 6.1 kernel, but the patch could probably be cherry-picked from Ubuntu if it's not. I have learned how to backport/patch/rebuild Debian kernels for MX Linux, so could do the same for 6.1 bookworm kernels that I backport for the bullseye-based MX 21 6.1 kernels I do.

Hello to both, @Aki and @stevepusser!!

I applied the patch that @Aki pointed out, and now my keyboard works!! Wooohooo!! Further below I will detail the steps I followed. It was my first time applying a kernel patch, and I spent the afternoon figuring out how to do it, but I'm so happy it worked, thank you so much!

@stevepusser, thank you so much for your suggestion. I will also try installing a higher kernel through liquorix like you said, maybe that is a shorter path to solution than patching the kernel (which took me about 2hs to complete). I will report back here the results when I have them.

It is my first time posting here, and I can't really express how much this solution has brightened my day and weekend. The debian community is amazing, and although I have been reading and learning from posts for 10+ years, I have never directly participated. This is exciting, and it gives me hope!!! Thank you.

---

Here below are the steps I followed for the kernel patch, references at the end:

1. Downloaded the kernel patch file from https://bugzilla.kernel.org/attachment. ... ction=edit
I saved it to the download folder.
2. Then excecuted the following commands, based on [1] instructions. Detailed explanations in [1]!

Code: Select all

su

Code: Select all

sudo apt build-dep linux

Code: Select all

sudo apt source linux
The kernel that I downloaded with the command above was linux-6.5.3

Code: Select all

cd linux-6.5.3/

Code: Select all

sudo patch -p1 < /home/jessie/Downloads/AsusKeyboard-6.1.49-patch.patch
The path above is where I saved the .patch file.
Then, below I used the config file for the newest kernel I found at /boot/, as per [1] instructions.

Code: Select all

sudo cp /boot/config-6.5.0-0.deb12.1-amd64 .config
Here according to [1] you have to open the .config file and delete a line, but the line didn't exist in the file (I assume it was for an earlier version?) so I skipped that step.
Continued with,

Code: Select all

sudo make oldconfig
For the following command, I modified the instructions from [1] due to error output, correcting with info from [2]. This next step takes a long time (for me I think it was about 1.5hs)

Code: Select all

sudo make -j8 bindeb-pkg LOCALVERSION=-custom
Then,

Code: Select all

cd ..

Code: Select all

sudo dpkg -i linux-image-6.5.3-custom_6.5.3-3_amd64.deb linux-headers-6.5.3-custom_6.5.3-3_amd64.deb
I didn't install the debug kernel, as I don't need it.
Then I did a reboot, and it booted from my new custom kernel, and ba-bam! Keyboard works!

Hello,

I'm happy you sorted it out and it was an opportunity to gain new knowledge, too.

Happy Debian!
