Due to an issue in ext4 with data corruption in kernel 6.1.64-1, we are pausing the 12.3 image release for today while we attend to fixes. Please do not update any systems at this time, we urge caution for users with UnattendedUpgrades configured. Please see bug# 1057843: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1057843

What are the consequences for anyone who has already installed this upgrade? The bug report refers to "non-serious data loss".

I ran `sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade` today, before I read this announcement. I only have a single partition. That single partition uses btrfs instead of ext4. How will I be adversely affected?

Btrfs and ext4 are independent, so you are safe in this case.
I have updated kernel to linux-image-6.1.0-15-amd64 and my laptop cannot even regularly turn off.
I have started SMART test from live-USB before I read this post.
I will probably have to reinstall whole system.
If you can, do not boot the affected kernel.

The 12.4 image and kernel 6.1.66 are available now

I have been running the broken kernel for a while. I am not a linux expert, but I have managed to install a run this test:
env LTP_SINGLE_FS_TYPE=ext4 LTP_DEV_FS_TYPE=ext4 ./preadv03_64
The result was passed. I have been thinking about reinstalling the Debian 12. Do I need to do it? Thank you.

I booted with broken kernel once more time and run test, and the result was FAILED, so it was not a good idea .
The computer looks OK, but I would like be sure that my data are not lost. Is it possible to check it with e2fsck - for example? Or better to reinstall and restore data from backup? Thank you.

Same experience. Read announcement after my morning routine of backing up and updating. Same experience of laptop not shutting down normally. I also noticed that my script for reconnecting my wifi using nmcli did not work.
+1 for clonezilla.
I presume there will be an announcement when updates are safe again?

is it just for 6.1.64? I upgraded to 12.3 few days ago but holded kernel upgrade so mine is 6.1.37:
uname -a
Linux localhost 6.1.0-10-amd64 #1 SMP PREEMP
T_DYNAMIC Debian 6.1.37-1 (2023-07-03) x86
_64 GNU/Linux

Debian 12.4 supersedes Debian 12.3: https://www.debian.org/News/2023/2023121002

I tried a clean install with the new 12.4, and for me, ran into the same issues with hanging up while shutting down, which seemed to be at the network or networkmanager stage. Not sure, but had to do a hard shutdown.
I then reinstalled one of my backup images (via clonezilla), so that I don't have to redo all my personal customizations and upgraded to Debian Testing, which gives me 6.5.0-5-amd64 kernel.
All is well again.

My issues could be caused not by alleged damage made by linux-image-6.1.0-14 (6.1.64-1),
but by bugs in 6.1.0-15-amd64 (6.1.66-1) ← link to topic.

You could have installed kernel 6.5 from bookworm-backports rather than changing to testing. Much less hassle and ongoing maintenance.
