Fingerprint reader not working on T480s

#1 Post by nachtpfoetchen »

Hello,
I try to make it a bit structured, but don't wont to sound blunt in any way:

Issue
Tried to setup fingerprint reader according to the wiki [1].
I get an error:

Code: Select all

# fprintd-enroll $username
Impossible to enroll: GDBus.Error:net.reactivated.Fprint.Error.NoSuchDevice: No devices available
Expected behavior
Software works without the error

What i found in google
There seams to be a way to make it work on ubuntu [2]. This includes adding a third party repository, using software that was remove from the repositories [3] and abandoned software [4]. Anyway the solution for ubuntu hints me that this is a proprietary driver issue. This sounds like a bad fix for something that handels userauth to me.

Final thoughts
Since bookworm we have enabled the non-free-firmware repository by default. maybe it would be possible to fix the problem if it really is caused by non-free-firmware. Unfortunately i don't know where to bug-report this. From what i get a satisfying solution for my problem seems not really in sight. :(

Used Hardware & Software
Lenovo Thinkpad t480s
Linux: 6.1.0-18-amd64
Debain: bookworm
fprintd version: 1.94.2-2
Finger-print reader: Synaptics, Inc. Metallica MIS Touch Fingerprint Reader

My understanding is this is a known issue with the T480S fingerprint reader.

There's a git repository here that appears to have the solution.

Direct link to the PPA is https://launchpad.net/~uunicorn/+archiv ... /+packages but I would *not* recommend adding the PPA to Debian.

I would recommend downloading and installing python-validity, fprintd-clients and open-fprintd - which should resolve the issue and the packages can be easily removed if they don't work.

Again, don't map to PPA to Debian, just grab the packages and install them.

Hope this helps -
we see things not as they are, but as we are.

Typo perfectionish.
