[Sound] [Solved] No HDMI sound output from monitor speakers

#1 Post by RunningRogue »

[OS]
Hi. I'm new to Debian. I'm currently running Debian 12, and I can't get my sound working. I'm using the test in settings, but no sound is created. I did a little research into the issue, but wasn't able to solve it. Could anyone help me get my sound working???

In other threads with similar issues, people pasted there output from pacmd, so I'll do the same in the hopes that it makes the whole process faster.

Hi,

Welcome to the forum!

Please could you give your topic a descriptive title, something like "[Sound] No analogue output from Family 17h/19h HD Audio Controller".

To help with diagnosis, please post output of

Code: Select all

$ inxi -Fxxxrz
You may need to install package inxi. This will give us system information.

Thank you.

Not the output I requested, so no, it doesn't. :shock:

Also, please edit the title of your first post as requested: topics need a meaningful title.

No worries. Thanks for adding a title.

Could you install pavucontrol and have a look in the configuration tab to see if you can change the profile to analog output?

I tried, but I couldn't do it. Maybe I did it wrong? Could you give me the steps involved?

Code: Select all

apt install pavucontrol
either as root

Code: Select all

$ su -
and enter password (NB note the space before the dash)

or with sudo if you have sudo set up, so either

Code: Select all

# apt install pavucontrol
(root prompt)

or

Code: Select all

$ sudo apt install pavucontrol
You can of course use Synaptic or the KDE package manager if you prefer.

Start pavucontrol from the KDE menu or the terminal

Code: Select all

$ pavucontrol
NB as user ($ promt)

Code: Select all

# exit
to get back to user prompt if you are still in root in the terminal.

Then click on the Configuration tab on the right

and check out what profiles are available and if any work.

Actually I should check what output you are expecting and what is available.

Where do you expect sound to come from? Monitor speakers? Line out? Headphones?

Output suggests the monitor is [Acer] XF243Y M3. It seems to have internal speakers. Is this what you are trying to use? Is it an HDMI plug for screen and sound?

Or do you have speakers or headphones plugged into the computer? Make and model?

If you are trying to use the monitor speakers, then you should be using the HDMI output profile, and I've made a mistake in assuming it was analogue, and it will be one of the HDMI profiles that you want, or HDMI output may not be working.

Sorry, I should have cleared that up before suggesting a title for the thread, but have a go with pavucontrol and see if you can find a working profile for your hardware: monitor, speakers or headphones.

If you can't, we can look for a solution for your hardware. It may actually be that HDMI output is not working.

Sorry, sorry, sorry for wasting your time. I went through the monitor menu, and as it turned out, the monitor was muted. Clearly, I'm stupid.
That aside, what should I rename this whole post as?

No need to apologise, I am very happy to hear you got sound working. And no need to put yourself down, we've all done the same thing. I have anyway. In fact the last sound topic I dealt with was somebody who had sound turned off in the BIOS. Believe me, it's better to hear that it was something easy to fix than spending time looking through outputs and making suggestions and not being able to find a solution. Thanks for letting us know how you fixed it, as this may help other users with the same issue. Obviously I'm at fault too for assuming it was analogue sound that you wanted and not actually establishing what output you were looking for. Apologies for that.

Maybe [Sound] [Solved] No HDMI sound output from monitor speakers.

I hope you enjoy using Debian!

Been there @RunningRogue! Either by having the mic muted or when I go to work having HDMI sound muted.
