[Solved] Is my pc okay ?

#1 Post by NarriT4010 »

I tried to fix one ram slot that stopped working.
Last time blowing dust out would let me boot but after switching sticks, the slot would give me an error again so i tried something else.
I poured the 99% alcohol into the dim slots but am pretty sure some got to the cpu and went under there. Now I found out it was too cold for it to evaporate. I put the pc on the heater now and tomorrow blow dry the cpu region but it did not start up only one led on the cmos clear and sometimes no led when power on.
Can my pc come back from this or do I need a new Mainboard & cpu or which one is more likely to be broken now ? Its a msi Z170a pc mate and a intel i7.

Yes
Concerning the wet parts, I have submerged boards and keyboards in isopropyl and even perchlorylethaline something for cleaning. Dry the part for days and reorient/flip the part many times during that period.

I removed the cooler to have socket and the core open to dry and the core was clearly full of the alcohol and i attempted to power them up like this. Might it still boot up after drying it in a warm room for 2 days or how bad is it ?

often very bad, but your nose and ears should alert you to fatal issues. If you heard or smelled nothing odd during that powered time you might get lucky. Yes days

Pure isopropyl alcohol does not conduct electricity. It may however dissolve certain materials. Pouring it in is a bad idea. It should be used to dampen a lint-free cloth or something and gently wipe the area to be cleaned.
If your motherboard still won't boot after cleaning and proper drying, there's a good chance it is FUBAR.
It may also be possible your power supply has become defective.

I bought the same board on Ebay today and I can test with another power supply, the cpu could be broken too ?

Anything can be broken. In my small experience of only a handful of computers, I've had 3 power supplies fail, one motherboard fail, and zero CPUs fail.

Reminds me of an old saying - "Any device can be a smoke machine if you use it wrongly enough".

Very Good!

And a note, isopropyl is usually a third water!
If it hurts something, that something was already junk. I do actually submerge stuff. The only things lost are some inks and some labels that are not important. This also assumes things intended to be disassembled are separated and reassembled with new dielectrics or appropriate goops.

My keyboard works now too after coffee was spilled over, had it dry for 2 - 3 days, turning it a few times and put a drop of mechanics oil into the switches. It types better than when I first had it because one of the switches was seemingly faulty.
