[Off-Topic] The oldest file that you have in your possession?

#1 Post by Uptorn »

Do you have a file sitting on your storage which dates back years or decades? Something which has followed you from one computer to the next? What is it?

I am most certain that the oldest file of mine is a bitmap image that I threw together in MS paint sometime around 2004. I can't bring myself to delete it if not because it now stands as a trophy against the test of time.

It's hard to determine what really is the oldest because some of my other OG files have had their timestamps set to January 1 1970.

I happened to have inherited my dad's Machinist (Tool & Die) tool box. There are some fairly old files in there ;)

The oldest files I have come from my Amiga 3000 backups. They are for a website I ran back between 1995 and 1998. They consist of some bitmap icons I did in DPaint and some html files. I ran them off the Alaska Public Library server at the branch in Juneau (had a dial up account with them and I think it was 100 MB of space). I open them every now and then when feeling nostalgic. The internet was much simpler and less cluttered back then.

Monday 9th October, 1995. It's a .bmp file of my signature that I scanned to insert into letters created in MS Word 2. Amazing thing is that I still use it.

I may have some that are older but they'd be on archive media so not immediately accessible. Reasonably sure that there are some database files going back to 1992, created on a 386DX40, but not going to spend the time to go hunting for them. And then there are a few 1.2MB floppies marked "Data"......

My oldest personal files are from 2005: Notes from university, photos and IRC/Facebook/MSN Messenger chat logs.
I guess my posts on this forum go back to 2006/2007 if you're counting that. :)

Sadly, all of my files from before were either not interesting to keep or I lost them on dying hard drives, but they could have theoretically gone back all the way to 1995 when I had an Amiga.

I have a file I made in 96/97. It was from a lesson on adding watermarks to Word files.

After that I have some CD-Rs from 2002 filled with music and movies... And all of my university files are on DVD, those start around 2002 as well and there are A LOT of DVDs.

My oldest files are from April 18th, 1990. They are a program and source code to generate a saying everytime it is called. The program is for DOS.

I didn't have a computer until about 2000. The oldest file I have that I currently use is my xorg.conf for my ppc imac 333mhz. From 2007.
If you want to embarrass me search the forum.
I just looked and was amazed by the amount of views. Can that be correct?
