[Solved] VirtualBox and Virt-manager insane!

#1 Post by limotux »

Anything wrong with Debian/MX Linux updates recently? I had VirtualBox running OK with MX Linux virtual machine installed and running perfectly. a few hours ago, it gone bananas. I deleted the virtual machines, installed new virtual machines. Still bananas. Not booting if I change to systemd! Even Debian installed OK till the end, but doesn't boot! I tried several times with Debian and MX Linux as guests.
I did the same and tried both guest OS on both VirtualBox and virt-manager.

I had VirtualBox with MX guest installed and using systemd on guest for a few weeks, till it started this a few hours ago.

Anybody experiencing such problems? Is it a problem with an update?

By the way, I just installed MX Linux as guest on VirtualBox, still defaults and didn't change anything or change to systemd.
I could boot after installation one time only. Rebooting, it does not do anything after I enter my user password thoug I didn’t change anything or even update.

I think it is something related to a recent update because I had everything working fine for a several weeks. Kernel perhaps?
Any feed back will be highly appreciated.

Hello,

Does the Debian server (used as a VM host) boot/work correctly?

Are only the guest VMs affected (you can't boot them)?

I guess so. Virtual machines boot till the login screen but nothing happens after that. Just a blank screen and does not log in to KDE

Does MX/Debian run as LiveUSB in V-Box, Gnome-Boxes or Virt-Manager?

What do you mean for "login screen" ?

Yesterday Debian released a security update of the kernel for Debian Bookworm.

I successfully installed it in my Debian Bookworm 12.5 host and Debian Bookwork 12.5 KVM guest (running xfce).

What is the kernel version in your VM host and VM guests ? You can use the following command in a virtual console of both host and guests:

Code: Select all

uname -a

The login screen: The virtual machine boots, till I get a screen to enter the password for the current user (a single user that is my user name), it is supposed after that to give me the KDE desktop, but I never get it. All what I get a dark screen with nothing on it.
The kernel version: It is the default kernel, and I do updates regularly. So, it is the latest default kernel.
You say KVM guest, I think it is different from VirtualBox. But I tried virt-manager (which I assume uses KVM), but had same issue.
Do you mean only KVM without virt-manager and without virtualbox?
Maybe it is an issue with KDE in particular (as you are using XFCE)?

I don't have any problem with either VirtualBox or virt-manager (qemu/kvm). I am running Debian Sid, fully updated, on AMD Ryzen+Radeon APU. But I don't think that should make any difference.

Another difference is that I installed Debian from the hybrid live-built iso and not from netinstall. We have noticed some subtle but sometimes critical differences with packages installed in these different systems. However, I am not knowledgeable enough to find out what and how. Apparently some support packages were not installed if we started the Debian system from netinstall.

I'm having no difficulty with VirtMan in Debian. Which version do you have? I'm on 4.1.0, which apt reports is the most recent available.
Among other things, I just successfully upgraded an MX-23 VM to the 6.1.0-20 kernel, where the Debian host already had been upgraded to said kernel.

Not having trouble with VBox either, but I'm still using 7.0.12 because I don't upgrade that unless the change log suggests a good reason.

You may start Debian, try to login (replicating the problem), then switch to a guest VM virtual console (search the instruction for your VM host) and get a copy of your system logs with the following command for further investigation:

Code: Select all

sudo apt install pastebinit
journalctl -b --no-pager > log.txt
pastebinit log.txt

@pbear: thanks for reporting.

@limotux: posting the same topic to multiple forums at the same time is a waste of human resources. Please avoid doing this in the future.

Please accept my apology.

Maybe I was mistaken, I just thought that MX is based on Debian and it follows Debian, so I considered both forums can help. I posted there because it is the distro I am having the problem with, and posted here because this is the origin/father of MX Linux.

But you know what, after trying MX Linux for a few days, I am back to Debian.
I simply find it much better suiting me and my needs and fits the quality I am looking for much much more than MX Linux.
