[Software] Suspend is acting like a restart

#1 Post by TuxOS »

I'm new to Debian, been using it for a few weeks. I'm having an issue when my PC suspends from being inactive. When I wake it up, and log back in, all previous programs that were opened are closed. If I had a terminal window open, or Brave open, they'll be closed and I'd have to start a new session. Brave can be restored, but I would like it if they would remain in the state they were in prior to being suspended. Any ideas on this? I have disabled suspend for now, but would like to enable it, if I can find a fix for this. Any one see this before, any ideas?

Brave is not in stable's repos. Debian security team only covesr firefox-esr and chromium, uninstall brave and install supported. If still does not work, report back.

It doesn't matter the application that I had open. I could have have system monitor, trash can, or whatever open, and they'd be closed once log back in after being suspended.

Hello, welcome to the forums!

Please edit your first post with a title that describes your problem, not just a prefix, thanks.

Are you sure your computer is coming back from suspend and not from a reboot? I find it surprising that this kills processes. Can you please check the uptime right after this happens?

Code: Select all

$> uptime
What is the output of

Code: Select all

$> free -h
Can you also check your logs for clues:
last boot:

Code: Select all

#> journalctl -b 0
previous boot:

Code: Select all

#> journalctl -b -1
Please paste here any part you think is relevant.

Its not rebooting when it suspends. The uptime is correct.

Thanks, I edited your first post with this subject :)

You have 16 GB memory but your swap is only 1GB and probably too little to allow a proper suspend. Don't you have any traces of this in your logs?

Please paste text instead of using images, thanks. You can also attach compressed files to your posts if you want.

Here you go. I'll look at increasing the swap file, but my other PC with Zorin on it uses 1GB for the swap and it doesn't have this problem.

Code: Select all

administrator@Debian:~$ uptime
 15:01:43 up 6:36, 1 user, load average: 0.25, 0.54, 0.41
administrator@Debian:~$ free -h
total used free shared buff/cache available
Mem: 15Gi 3.5Gi 9.4Gi 510Mi 3.3Gi 11Gi
Swap: 975Mi 0B 975Mi

Code: Select all

administrator@Debian:~$ journalctl -b 0

Thanks for the info. I increased the swap to 5GB and still no diff. I've attached the log file.

Yes, I must have been a bit confused when writing this. Not a bad thing to increase swap though.

gnome-shell segfaults, that's why the programs are closed. It would have been helpful if you could say what time you suspended.

Code: Select all

Try running GNOME with xorg instead of wayland and see if this still happens. If so, please post the output of

Code: Select all

$> inxi --za -Fa
it might give some clues about the problem.
If you have time, reinstall your system cleanly and see if this still happens. Keep it clean anyway, try to avoid external sources and things like flatpak. If you install external things, test your system at every step.

He's trying to suspend, not hibernate - swap size has nothing to do with it. I have no swap at all, and it suspends just fine.
