[SID - Unstable] [SOLVED] [SID - Unstable] XFCE background stuck at default background and display refresh rate incorrec

#1 Post by SomeDebianUser »

Hello, today I booted up my computer and found my background has been switched to xfce's default background. I tried to change it by following these steps, right click desktop -> select pictures folder -> click on picture -> set style to zoom (I tried all styles) but it wouldn't change. I opened the settings editor to make sure my changes are being registered and they were.

While troubleshooting, I opened my display settings. I found my refresh rate stuck at 77hz even though my monitor supports 144hz. There were no options displayed aside from 77hz even though there previously have been many (from 30 to 144 if I recall correctly). So I thought it's a problem with my nvidia drivers so I opened GreenWithEnvy to check if everything is running correctly but it greeted me with the error 'NV-Control X Extension not found'. In attempt to fix it, I reinstalled the nvidia drivers following Debian's guide but it did not change anything.

I don't know if these two issues are related but they started happening together at the same time. I can't think of anything that may have caused them aside from a update I did yesterday but I would assume if it was the cause, I would have spotted it yesterday after rebooting.

Any help is appreciated

My specs:
CPU: i3-12100F
GPU: Nvidia RTX 3060 Ti
OS: Debian sid
DE: xfce4

Edit: I fixed it by installing the package nvidia-xconfig and running

Code: Select all

sudo nvidia-xconfig
then restarting. After the restart all issues disappeared. It seems that after the updating two days ago my driver confgiruation was messed up and I had to do it manually. If anyone finds themselves in this issue, refer to the configuration section in this guide by Debian
