[Software] Very few programs opening - consistent error message

Hi team

First-time Debianner, long-time Linuxer (ish - I've been on and off for half my life). Running Debian 12 with KDE on some very old hardware.

I've turned the machine on today and discovered that I can open basically no programs. Went to play a cheeky game of AisleRiot and all I got was an error message saying "Could not find the program 'sol'". I tried a few tidbits - uninstalling and re-installing AisleRiot, rebooting the machine, apt update/upgrade, all with no luck. Tried to open up other programs, and lo and behold, "Could not find the program" became a running gag. I was able to open the terminal, the file manager, the browser (Firefox), and not much else.

Is there something I've missed here, and what other information is needed to crack this?

Fixed that for you: it was actually just the [ hr ] (without spaces) lines.

Update: I have checked a few more programs. Looks like the issue is only and exactly with the Games folder, based on the following.

Messing around with a live image here. It's Trixie, but it gave me some ideas.

Trying to install aisleriot and black-box gave me some errors about being unable to download some files. aisleriot installed with errors, but I could launch the game with

I guessed the missing files where in contrib or non-free, and adding those repository sections I could reinstall without error.

Well, the first experiment didn't work. I would have expected sol to launch when you are actually in its directory. Probably because it's not a user directory and the command is still looking in user paths, which seem to be wrong.....

Is the output I get, which obviously contains the information that is missing in yours: where to find games.

Somehow your environmental variables have got messed up, or at least the path variable.

These are defined in system files and user files. The user can override the system defaults. Hopefully it's just something you have done as a user that has caused this. Have a look at the link above and see if you have made any changes described there. Does anything look familiar?

The ~/.profile file would be an obvious place to look.
