X.org 7 and nv, xserver won't start

X.org 7 and nv, xserver won't start

Hi,

I've been running Debian for about 6 years now, and stupidly did a dist-upgrade last night. Xorg 7 has completely baffled me. I tried to go back to 6.9, but issue with nvidia-glx (I need 6629, but that is not available anymore). So, I decided to use the "nv" module until things get settled down.

After modifying my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file to use "nv", I can't start X. I don't see anything seriously wrong in the /var/log/Xorg.0.log, which is posted below. There are some issues with font paths, which I also haven't figured out. Since I don't see any errors in the log, could the errors with fonts be the problem?

Hello,
I'am also a debian user since few years with my Nvidia video card. (Ge2 Mx)
each time I upgrade kernel or xerver, I've to recompile nvidia kernel then I kepp preciously 3 version and I've the one you need :-) (for my card the best driver is 7174).

Not specific to your problem I'm afraid, because I don't have an NVIDIA, but a generic advice: xorg 7 in unstable is very new, and in the upcoming weeks many of the problems will be worked out. I'd not advise to upgrade to xorg 7 now if you're not really well prepared to deal with any problems.

Well, I didn't want to upgrade to xorg7. I just didn't know that a dist-upgrade included xorg7. A few hours of twiddling and I'm back to 6.9.
