Recently switched to LMDE. My purpose was to make it easier for my wife to deal with while still staying as close to Debian as possible. Loving Cinnamon. She just wasn't comfortable with the other environments and I figured if Cinammon was it I should use the distro that built / maintains it. She doesn't use the machine often enough to warrant an entire user account. Sticks to her iPad most of the time.

Debian 12 GNOME. Made a compilation of Lionel Walden paintings and set them to change each 10 minutes on wallpaper with Wallpaper Slideshow extension.

Switched recently to Debian 12 from Windows 11 (while still keeping Windows partition for anything) and I'm never become so happy before. I made my desktop to look like late 2000s and early 2010s aesthetics. I love it, it looks very pretty and futuristic.

Latest version of LXQT (during image placement it is a version 1.3.0) running on top of Debian 12 " Bookworm".





If anyone is interested, this version was compiled by myself (while using precompiled binary packages will be appropriate most of the time compiling from sources may very well make sense, too, e. g. to run latest development versions if these aren't available on a particular operating system), because I really wanted to use the new version of lxqt, but I didn't want to switch to a new version of Debian (testing or unstable).

What was noticed in the new version of LXQT?
Font rendering has improved, LXQT has become lighter (the entire system uses only 400 megabytes at first start). There was a feeling that LXQT has become more complete.

Back when I first tried LXQt it just wasn't mature enough so I went with XFCE at the time. I thought about giving it a shot again when I installed Debian, but I learned that LXQt uses the KDE Framework and I'd prefer to avoid KDE after speaking with a couple KDE devs who banned me from their forum because they couldn't allow me to "slander" their "sponsor" when I said that Framework, laptop manufacturer, was just using a piece of old stock to promote their products in the open source community.

Cinnamon works great though. The system monitor shows that my system is using 1.5GB after boot, but it breaks it down a bit and shows that 750MB of that is just cached data which can be cleared to free up memory as needed so it's really only eating up roughly 790MB of memory which is pretty good I think. Certainly compared to Windows.

Anyway, I don't want to derail the thread so here's a photograph of my custom boot menu. The background is black and it's a bright day so there's a lot of reflection on the glossy screen, but you get the idea.

LXQt isn't much more than just Openbox, LXQt's own panel (it's quite nice, but I rather just use tint2 or xfce4-panel if I'm on openbox) and some other LXQt related apps of which I only use pcmanfm-qt, which has become my favorite file manager. What I'm trying to say is I've never really found reason to use LXQt itself.

Back on topic, I'm on IceWM again. I love all the retro themes and that it comes with its own panel which more or less does everything I want. It also has great support for sound effects but I haven't gotten around to setting those back up yet.

Been back on KDE for a few weeks. Found this plasma theme in the repos called "Ghost" from 2010. It still works, but is only a plasma theme + colorscheme. Building an entire theme around it has been a fun distraction
