It's sad to see all the old posts on this thread got killed when imageshack decided to die. Would have been cool to see everyone's desktop over the years, oh well.

Just upgraded to Bookworm, painless really. i3wm.

I successfully installed Hyprland in Debian stable (Debian 11). For this purpose I used Nix package manager and Nix Flakes. It took about two hours to compile code :)

I see everyone is crazy about Hyprland. That's why I decided to try it. However, I'm not quite ready to switch to Arch linux or Fedora, so I decided to use Nix package manager and Nix Flakes.

Hyprland as in hype :D

But it does look super slick. Kind of like what hacker movies looked like in the 90s. I hope it will get spaceship sound effects, too.

I would hesitate to use hyprland in production environment. It is alpha software and except for the animation effects, it has nothing special in it. If my opinion counts, then sway is significantly better

None1975 wrote: 2023-01-12 13:10 Sawfish...It's an amazing window manager. I don't understand why sawfish is being forgotten and Openbox is much more popular..don't know why but sawfish wm is a fully configurable window manager. And it is not necessary to measure the lisp programming language. All configuration can be done using the GUI. For example, I set this window manager to virtually no mouse use using the GUI configuration tools. All control is performed using only the keyboard.

I'd heard of Sawfish but never seen it in use until now. Looks nice, gonna have to take it for a spin. Personally I'm a big fan of icewm, jwm and fvwm for older stuff. I tried e16 as well but it was a bit much for my tastes.

Hello :) Yes, it is nice window manager. Last version is 1.13.0 (beta) released in 2021-Dec-24

I spent the last few hours playing with it and yes, it's surprising I never see anybody mention it! I would expect it to at least be competing with Openbox for popularity, but then I feel the same way about Icewm and rarely do I see people using that, either. I can only guess that Openbox's slightly more sleek and modern look (though I still think it's a shame it doesn't support pixmap window deco themes) and super streamlined configuration is a major pull. Personally, I love the chunky, blocky style many of these older WMs have. Goes great with the CDE or Motif qt5 styles in qt5-style-plugins.

From what I tried, I got Sawfish to do everything I need a WM to do (though setting a binding for centering a window didn't quite work, it centered it between my two displays instead), and it has more potential to do more on top of that than Openbox does, to my knowledge. It's like a much less intimidating (though probably not quite as powerful) FVWM.

This is where I'm at now. I've gotten fairly lazy with customization. This is nearly a vanilla Bookworm XFCE.

Disorder consists of arranging certain elements so that they do not suggest known geometric shapes to the observer.

Debian 12 "Bookworm" running flawlessly on my laptop, showing Sway on Wayland with the Foot terminal, Newsboat feed reader, vim and the lovely Dracula colour scheme.

Debian Stable is where you want to be if you like Gnome these days. By the time a Gnome release comes to stable, all the ridiculous bugs get ironed out and you just cruise along.
