Were you logged out while you did it?

Probably easiest to quit to the login screen, use a different virtual console (e.g. Ctrl-Alt-F1) to log back in, mv the directory, and use Ctrl-Alt-F7 to get back to the GUI login...

Did you delete your .kde4, or roots? In

Code: Select all

mv ~/.kde4 ~/.kde4.old
the tilde is shorthand for the current user's home directory...

Odd...

Maybe try creating a new user (adduser is easy enough...), see if that has the same problem?

Beyond me I'm afraid... Only thing I'd suggest is reinstalling kde-plasma-desktop (or any other preferred metapackage).

This happened to me few times on Wheezy, but it seems to be fixed on Jessie - apparently KDE Menu componnent wasn't tested at all, and it fails mainly on 64bit multicore systems without an explicit reason. I would suggest to switch to newer KDE version, what hopefully would silence the problem.
