[SOLVED] Video tearing (Debian stable & Intel 915GM chipset)

#1 Post by maurizeio »

Hello everybody,
I am suffering from screen tearing along with poor graphics performance. I suspect I am not using hardware acceleration at all. My distro is Crunchbang (Waldorf), so I have Openbox as desktop environment and Compton as compositor. Anyway I think this problem is not crunchbang-related because I had previously installed Debian Wheezy XFCE and the same annoyances were present.

I hope the following information are useful...

Output of glxinfo:

I have no /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. However there are some files in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d but nothing about graphics.

Code: Select all

maurizeio@hpdv4000:~$ ls /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/
10-evdev.conf  50-synaptics.conf  50-vmmouse.conf  50-wacom.conf
maurizeio@hpdv4000:~$

Compton .config file:

Code: Select all

# Shadow

no-dnd-shadow = true;
no-dock-shadow = true;
#clear-shadow = true;
#shadow-radius = 7;
#shadow-offset-x = -7;

# shadow-green = 0.0;
# shadow-blue = 0.0;

# Opacity

detect-rounded-corners = true;

#refresh-rate = 0;

paint-on-overlay = false;
sw-opti = false;

# Window type settings
wintypes:
{
  tooltip = { fade = true; shadow = false; opacity = 0.85; };
};

Notice also that compton runs with the "--vsync opengl" argument. I already tried disabling compton and also I tried messing up the .config file but none helped. I tried upgrading the xserver-xorg-video-intel package with the backports version but this made the situation even worse so I downgraded it back.

Any help is appreciated.

Look at the output of:

Code: Select all

lspci -knn|grep -iA2 vga
If you do not have "i915" in the "Kernel driver in use" bit then you need to upgrade to the kernel from the wheezy-backports repository; here is a guide I prepared earlier:
http://crunchbang.org/forums/viewtopic.php?id=36896

Once you have that driver, add this to your /etc/xorg.conf (create the file if it does not exist):

Code: Select all

Section "Device"
	Identifier "Intel Graphics"
	Driver "intel"
	Option "TearFree" "True"
EndSection
EDIT: Using `compton --backend glx --vsync opengl-swc` works very well but the version in CrunchBang is ancient and doesn't support these options -- you could try building the current version from source (@twoion gave a step-by-step guide to this on the CrumchBang forums if you can find it).

Thank you! It seems the driver is listed:

Code: Select all

maurizeio@hpdv4000:~$ lspci -knn|grep -iA2 vga
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Intel Corporation Mobile 915GM/GMS/910GML Express Graphics Controller [8086:2592] (rev 04)
	Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device [103c:3081]
	Kernel driver in use: i915
maurizeio@hpdv4000:~$

I'll try creating the xorg.conf as you suggested. I'll repost soon.

Re: Video tearing (Debian stable & Intel 915GM chipset)

#5 Post by Head_on_a_Stick »

Looks like your card doesn't support that option -- you could try a backported kernel & xserver-xorg-video-intel, but I don't think that would help...

Or try compiling the new version of compton, but this might not build in wheezy.

Alternatively, switch to Debian jessie and copy over the setup & config files from CrunchBang -- I have done this with Arch to very good effect.

EDIT: Here we go -- openbox with tint2:
Image

Use a netinstall with the desktop un-selected, install xorg, openbox & tint2 (and all the rest), copy /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc to ~/.xinitrc then add "exec openbox-session" to the bottom of the file and add this to ~/.profile to autostart the X server once logged in:

Code: Select all

[[ -z $DISPLAY && $XDG_VTNR -eq 1 ]] && exec startx
You can then copy over ~/.config/openbox/* & ~/.config/tint2/tint2rc & ~/.conkyrc from CrunchBang to jessie and probably some other configuration files I am forgetting -- it's an adventure!

Re: Video tearing (Debian stable & Intel 915GM chipset)

#6 Post by maurizeio »

Following instructions from this post:

http://crunchbang.org/forums/viewtopic. ... 48#p394548

I successfully compiled and installed a more recent version of compton (0.1~beta2).

Using configuration suggested in the same post:

Code: Select all

backend = "glx";
vsync-method = "opengl-mswc";
glx-swap-method = "1";
xrender-sync = "1";
resulted in my desktop "blinking". I commented out the last two lines and changed vsync-method to "opengl-swc" (as you suggested in the edit) and now blinking disappeared and video tearing seems reduced. However I lost the previous compton config file so I don't know how to stress it a bit, just to see if it keeps working without tearing. I lost also many useful entry in the openbox menu I don't know how to recover.

Anyway thanks for the help.

Have a look under /etc/skel -- there are copies of most of the config files there ;)

My erstwhile colleagues on the CruchBang forum are very good at fixing this sort of thing, you should probably ask them about it:
