[SOLVED] Laptop on Lid Close - Not Suspended, just locked

#1 Post by jesus92gz »

Hello.

I'm having a problem with Debian 7.8 Wheezy. I'm using Gnome in classic mode.

I have configured in advanced settings so that when the lid is closed, the laptop will suspend. But instead of being suspended, when I close the lid, the session is locked. So it's detecting the lid is closing, but action is misconfigured. When I press my keyboard shortcut to suspend, or click shutdown... suspend, it is being suspended correctly.

Here it is the image of the configuration in advanced settings:

This another problem is offtopic, but I think that's somehow related with power management as well:
Sometimes, when I the computer is on for a while, without any activity, the computer is just locked. The screen is fully black, no blinking cursor, and if I press CTRL + ALT + F1 [or F2, F3, Fn], it's not displaying any terminal. If I press CTRL + ALT + SUPR/DELETE it won't reboot neither.

Thank you.

Have you checked the logs after closing -> reopening the lid and logging back? Particularly these ones -
  1. pm-suspend.log
  2. dmesg
  3. syslog
in /var/log directory. Post back the contents of the first one and last 40-50 lines of the latter two (immediately after suspend - fail - log back cycle) if unsure. Might be able to give us some clues.

pm-suspend.log (I think that, if I'm correct, this log is created when I press suspend shortcut or in the shutdown menu)

Re: Laptop on Lid Close - Not Suspended, just locked

Are you using systemd?

I remember this:
http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?p=518599#p518599

… or maybe things have changed since then, don't know.

Bye

I'm not using systemd. Any way I can accomplish this without systemd?

If not systemd, then maybe a bug like this one : https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... bug/863834

Possible workaround based on a comment in the above bug report : http://askubuntu.com/a/395440

Re: Laptop on Lid Close - Not Suspended, just locked

I tried that fix, adding lid.sh.post in /etc/acpi/local/, but it's not resulting in suspended mode. I also tried adding pm-suspend everywhere in lid.sh config file without expected result.

The lid.sh.post file settings (755 permissons, owner root, as the other scripts in /etc/acpi/)

Code: Select all

root@debian:/etc/acpi/local# ls -l
total 4
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 101 feb 14 18:24 lid.sh.post
The lid.sh.post content (I tried both #!/bin/bash and #!/bin/sh, just in case):

Code: Select all

root@debian:/etc/acpi/local# cat lid.sh.post
#!/bin/sh

grep -q closed /proc/acpi/button/lid/*/state
if [ $? = 0 ]
then

/usr/sbin/pm-suspend

fi
What's curious is that, even if I remove the main lid.sh script that's triggered when the lid is closed/opened, from /etc/acpi/, it's also locking the screen. The wrong event or script may be triggered, I think. How could I check what's the event/script that's triggered? I will try editing other files in /etc/acpi meanwhile, and try to fix it on my own.

I have read somewhere I could run this command to check if it detects the lid close. And it doesn't. It just detects events when I click fn+F1 (sleep/suspend shortcut in keyboard). This is the output of this command:

Code: Select all

root@debian:/etc/acpi/local# udevadm monitor --environment
monitor will print the received events for:
UDEV - the event which udev sends out after rule processing
KERNEL - the kernel uevent

I run the following command in order to check if the lid state is changing.

Code: Select all

root@debian:/proc/acpi/button/lid/LID# for ((i=0;i<100;i++)); do cat /proc/acpi/button/lid/LID/state; sleep 5; done;
state:      open
state:      open
state:      open
state:      open
state:      closed
state:      closed
state:      closed
state:      closed
state:      closed
state:      closed
state:      closed
state:      open
state:      open
state:      open
In /etc/acpi/events/lidbtn the event that it listens to, and the action/script that's triggered:

Code: Select all

# /etc/acpi/events/lidbtn
# Called when the user closes or opens the lid

event=button[ /]lid
action=/etc/acpi/lid.sh
I have also reboot the computer with lid.sh.post and also without main lid.sh, and the functionality is the same, screen locked.

Thank you

Re: Laptop on Lid Close - Not Suspended, just locked

I have found the solution:

There is a script that's run each time the lid is closed lid.sh in /etc/acpi/ directory.
After setting up some logging/debugging logs, I could notice that the script was no longer running after CheckPolicy && exit line in lid.sh. So I decided to remove this line, and the screen was still locked. But this was crucial for the suspend when lid close to be functional.

I then edited, /etc/default/acpi-support and uncommented one line:

Code: Select all

# Uncomment this to enable ACPI sleep when the lid screen is closed.
LID_SLEEP=true
Thank you for your help. This problem is now solved and it's working as expected.
