Actually, I did try to read your posts carefully, but found that the more I tried, the more confused I got, (no fault of yours, I get confused easily, probably the meds I take, but anyway that is another topic)
by Rick B. »You must not be that familiar with all of Mint's projects
No, I do not use it, tried it several years ago, but for many reasons, did not use it very long,....any way, we are talking about Debian, aren't we ?
by Rick B. »Calling Xiphos from the Terminal makes no difference; the problem is still there.
Nooo, I did not mean to give the impression it would make any difference or fix anything,...guess I confused you, by not being more clear,..
Me:You could try running 'xiphos' from a terminal, there might be some clues in the terminal out put,
Maybe H-O_A_S, can clarify, when he gets here,... what I mean is if you run it from the terminal, you should see some messages about what is going on, and maybe there will be some error messages that give us a clue as to what goes wrong, Did you see any thing in the terminal ? Try looking at what it says......
by Rick B. » I will try submitting a bug report with Debian since the problem does NOT exist with Mint main edition or Ubuntu based distros. Thanks.
Yes, but maybe , wait,...you know, supposedly they use some proprietary (non -free) software/firmware, and drivers. Debian dose not, not in a default installation, and there might be something you can install,
in fact you even said something about that:

All I need is an updated version of gtk3 which should solve the problem.
Debian dose not use the most uptodate, "shiny , newest" versions of some software either,...this is one of the big differences between Debian and the other distros, ....but any way, yes I think a bug report is a good idea, I may try installing it , Xiphos my self and see what I get as well. But later, I am really busy and am not sure when I will get a chance..
Installing Xiphos from source is a complex and time consuming process--- snip---
Yes it would be , especially since it is intended to run under/with gnome,...and that is one reason I am reluctant to try installing it, I don't want all the gnome dependencies , etc.... later
